COPA opposes mandatory egress training, wearing PFDs for private seaplane ops
    COPA
With relatively little time to study the NPA and issues surrounding the amendments, COPA sought a position from our COPA Flight 72, which is also the BC Floatplane Association, and which is one of the largest if not the largest organized group of private seaplane pilots in Canada. Following consideration by its board of directors, a position opposed to the amendments being made applicable to private operations was sent to COPA and it is enclosed in this letter.

    Letter from BC Floatplane Association.

Since this is considered a policy matter for COPA, the COPA Board of Directors was also polled for its direction. The board agreed that the requirement for egress training and for mandatory wearing of PFDs should not be extended to our sector of aviation. The following are reasons why COPA is opposed.

Editorial: Canadians, SAR techs deserve better
    Ottawa Citizen
The Conservative government's take on embarrassing revelations that air force technicians had to scavenge parts from a museum display to keep one of Canada's ancient search-and-rescue planes in the air seems to be that the whole thing was a silly gaffe. Asked in the House of Commons about the 2012 incident involving a C-130 plane, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson referred to a "mistake" without revealing what it was or who made it.

Amazing Nova Scotia scenery awaits flyers
    The Chronicle Herald
Nova Scotia is a province long known for its seafaring tradition. But the province is as spectacular from the air as it is sailing its seas, and every bit as habit-forming. Just ask Gordon Squires. Squires has been flying small aircraft for years, logging hundreds of flights in his 1960 single-engine Piper Comanche aircraft based at the Waterville municipal airport in Kings County. "Nova Scotia is an amazing place for small planes," he said while preparing his 180-horsepower aircraft for a flight.

What's your job: Jeremy Hansen; astronaut, fighter pilot, deep sea explorer
    Yahoo Finance Canada
Jeremy Hansen's career as an astronaut was determined early on in life. As a child growing up in on a farm in southern Ontario, Hansen would look up at the moon in the dark night sky and imagine the day he, too, would fly into space. "That had a profound effect on me," Hansen — no relation — said in an interview from Houston, Texas, where he lives and trains as an elite member of the Canadian Space Agency.

A Windsor, Ontario, air cadet group training at the HMCS Hunter building, which is slated to close in a few weeks, has found a new home thanks to three anonymous donors. The mysterious benefactors have given 3-64 Lancaster Squadron a new space and equipment at Windsor Airport hangar. Major Steve Stephenson, one of the squadron's pilots, said the gift couldn't have come at a better time.

    An Alaskan adventure
    General Aviation News
According to author Ivy McIver: "It's like a magic carpet!" This is how my friend Wilma described the Cirrus SR22T on a recent trip from Seattle to Anchorage and back. A few weeks prior to my departure, I was talking about my upcoming flight to Anchorage and Wilma asked if she could ride along since I would be flying solo. She was cooking up plans for her own flight to Alaska in her RV10 and wanted to ride along before taking on the flight as pilot in command.

Before staging play, a chance to meet pioneer
    Democrat & Chronicle
In a sense it was research, actors doing a reality check, making sure they understood what made their characters tick. But it was more than that, far more. As the theater students from the College at Brockport sat and talked with Dawn Rochow Balden Seymour about her experience flying military planes stateside during World War II, it became clear that they were in the presence of a pioneer.

Soaring deer populations are nuisances for airports, threats to pilots
    The Journal Pioneer
Long the bane of gardeners and unwary motorists, soaring deer populations are also nuisances for airports and threats to pilots, especially at this time of year, according to aviation and wildlife experts. Whether driven by hunger or just crazy for love, deer will do seemingly anything to get onto airport grounds and runways. But put a deer and a plane together on a runway and both can have a very bad day.

    Opinion: The pilot shortage myth
Aviation Week & Space Technology via Aviation Week
Increasingly desperate attempts by those who promote this fallacy are inevitably losing ground to the facts. The traveling public, lawmakers and government leaders know the reality: Rock-bottom pay and benefits offered by regional airlines are failing to attract pilots and pushing potential new ones to other professions.
