Colin Stephenson, executive director of Air Show Atlantic, was back at Slemon Park with $30,000 in direct donations to some of the local groups that helped support the August event. It was the second year in a row that Summerside hosted the air show, although the 2012 event went more smoothly, from both the weather and organizational standpoints. More

Premier Aviation gets first fly-in client
The Windsor Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just a day after opening up its huge doors and showing off its new $23-million service station to reporters and dignitaries, Premier Aviation welcomed its first paying customer. A 50-seater turbo prop plane from an undisclosed international airline — its corporate identity masked even from local workers — flew in to the massive city-owned MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) service hangar at Windsor International Airport. Like a proud new father, Mayor Eddie Francis has been showing off smartphone images of the aircraft, which will undergo a major overhaul before being returned to the skies to ply its trade ferrying air passengers. Fighter pilots shut down CF-18 engines more than 200 times since 1988
Canada.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Government records show Canadian CF-18 pilots shut down one of their aircraft's two engines in midflight more than 200 times since 1988 because of safety concerns. The revelation highlights a key aspect of the debate over whether the single-engine F-35 stealth jet is not only the right aircraft for Canada, but also the safest — or whether the air force would be better off with another dual-engine jet. End of an era for specialized group of pilots as Endeavour shuttle heads to California museum
The Calgary Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's the ultimate piggyback ride: A space shuttle perched atop a Boeing 747 as the pair crisscrosses the country. For three decades, this was how NASA transported shuttles that landed in the California desert to their Florida home base. But it's coming to an end. Four pilots took turns flying a jumbo jet mounted with space shuttle Endeavour on a multi-leg journey bound for Los Angeles where it will go on display in a museum next month. More

A century of flight on P.E.I. was commemorated recently in Charlottetown. Warrant Officer 2nd Class John Addison, 17, Flight Sergeant William Pattison, also 17, and 16-year-old Sergeant Lucas Rooyakkers proudly earned their pilot's licenses over the summer. "I have seen how much effort and dedication they have put into it," said Jean-Guy Pitre, Commanding Officer of the 999 Royal Canadian Air Cadets. "It's inspiring to see in today's day and age, where there is so much competing for their interest. They have set their sights and they've made it." More
