Would you hesitate to declare an emergency?
General Aviation News
According to author Jeffrey Madison: The fact that all three of my passengers were throwing up simultaneously left me three options. I could have toughed it out and pressed on to our destination; joined them in their nauseous state; or declared an emergency and got the hell on the ground.

1st World War flyers risked shortened lifespan but have extended legacy
The Canadian Press via Winnipeg Free Press
Alan McLeod was only a teenager when he won the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest award for valour, in the bullet-riddled skies over France in the First World War. The wounded 18-year-old pilot stood on the wing of his burning plane, which had been raked by bullets from enemy fighters, reaching amid the flames in the cockpit to try and steer it earthward. His injured gunner straddled the fuselage, continuing to fire his machine-gun and knocking down three German aircraft.

Ottawa airport reopens largest runway
Ottawa South News via Ottawa Community News
Air traffic has noticeably changed course over Ottawa with last week's opening of the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport's newly reconstructed runway — the third and final landing strip to be overhauled as part of a multimillion dollar project. After years of planning, the $30-million reconstruction, funded by airport improvement fees, began on May 20. Meeting the deadline was essential to minimize the impact to neighbourhoods under the flight path.

Rescue for the rescuers
Air and Space Magazine
According to author Jay Ballard: The earthquake made the whole planet wobble. On the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, the residents of Banda Aceh were closest to the 9.0 quake's epicenter, feeling it just before 8 a.m. on December 26, 2004. Minutes later, the tsunami that it triggered washed the town out to sea. In the region, 225,000 people were killed — more than half of them in Banda Aceh. As one of the 5,500 crew members assigned to the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, on a port visit nearby in Hong Kong, I was in a hotel when CNN began reporting on the disaster. The commander of our strike group ordered us to head out, on what would soon be called Operation Unified Assistance.
