Baidar Bakht, Fellow of CSCE: Appointed Member of the Order of Canada

Scarborough's Baidar Bakht became a Member of the Order for his contributions and improvements to bridge design and for making Urdu poetry accessible to the Canadian public.

"I'm absolutely thrilled. It is out of this world to be honoured this way," said Bakht, who has been involved in bridge research for 40 years. "I suggest new ways of improving bridges with new materials so they can last forever. The efforts of my team have changed the way bridges have been designed," Bakht said. "We have invented a new slab deck that will never corrode because that is the first thing to corrode on a bridge."

Wanted: CSCE Liaison Officer for South Asia
CSCE
The CSCE’s International Affairs Committee (IAC) is looking for a dynamic CSCE member willing to join the committee as CSCE Liaison Officer for South Asia (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bangladesh). The CSCE member must be willing to serve a minimum of two years on IAC and to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours per year on unpaid volunteer committee work. Required qualifications include the ability to speak one of the major languages of the region (e.g. Hindi, Urdu, Tamil), regular personal or business travel to the region, and extensive connections with the engineering community in South Asia (especially India or Pakistan). The Liaison Officer for South Asia will work with other Liaison Officers, especially the Liaison Officer for India, and report to the IAC Chair. If interested, please contact Dr. Rishi Gupta, Deputy Chair of the International Affairs Committee, at guptar@uvic.ca.

City claims 90 per cent completion on infrastructure work in 2014

The city of Montreal presented its overview of road, sidewalk and water main repairs completed by its infrastructure division in 2014, claiming a 90-per cent-completion rate on 70 "integrated projects" worth $150 million underway in the city centre. Antigua signs $255 million deal with Chinese company to modernize port

The government of Antigua has signed a $255 million deal with a Chinese company to renovate the island's main port and harbour. Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation will modernize St. John's port and harbour. The company previously built other structures in Antigua, including a stadium and new airport terminal.
