2015 CANCAM Award
CANCAM
This biannual award from Canadian Congress of Applied Mechanics (CANCAM) recognizes outstanding achievements in the area of Applied Mechanics by a Canadian or non-Canadian researcher who has worked in Canada for a minimum of five years. All areas of Applied Mechanics (e.g., Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Computational Mechanics, Biomechanics) are considered. The award, which includes a medal, a certificate, and some travel support, will be presented at the 25th CANCAM to be held at Western University, London, Ontario in May 31-June 04, 2015.

This past weekend Concordia University hosted the 31st Annual CSCE Troitsky Bridge Building Competition. Thirty three teams and hundreds of students gathered in Montreal for three days of fun and competition, including bridge building, design presentations, and the infamous bridge crushing! Congratulations to Cégep de Chicoutimi who held on to the title of overall winner, which they also earned at last year's competition.

2015 James Dyson Award is now open

The James Dyson Foundation is looking for Canada’s best and brightest young industrial design and engineering students to submit their design idea for something that solves a problem. You could with a prize of $54,000. The competition runs in 20 countries and last year there were many notable Canadian entries, including national winner PrintAlive Bioprinter, from the University of Toronto and Suncayr from University of Waterloo. John Tory 'furious' about reported cost overruns in TTC construction

Mayor John Tory is "furious" over cost and time overruns on the construction of the York-Spadina subway extension and he is vowing a wholesale change in the way the city operates. The TTC's unfinished 8.6-kilometre subway extension from Downsview Station to York University and beyond to Vaughan is over budget, Tory said in a recent news conference. According to a report in the Toronto Star, the project is approximately $400-million over budget and possibly two years off-schedule.

Funding cutbacks hurt roads

A group of Lambton County mayors is pushing for increased infrastructure funding for rural municipalities. A delegation including Enniskillen Mayor Kevin Marriott recently met with representatives from the provincial Finance Minister’s office at the Ontario Good Roads Assocation conference in Toronto. A total of six municipalities were represented.

Winnipeg stadium consortium suing architect, builder over alleged construction deficiencies

Almost $5 million has already reportedly gone into fixing Winnipeg's Investors Group Field, which is set to host the Grey Cup this November, in the less than two years since the facility opened in May 2013. Further required repairs and alterations are expected to cost millions more. Now, the group that owns the stadium is suing architect Ray Wan and builder Stuart Olson Construction, alleging a failure to consider heating, drainage and other vital issues.
