Parks Canada spending $40 million to shore up crumbling Rideau Canal

Moving to address years of neglect, the federal government will spend nearly $40 million over the next five years to repair and replace crumbling infrastructure along the 183-year-old Rideau Canal. The recent announcement by Leona Aglukkaq, the minister responsible for Parks Canada, goes part way to addressing $104 million in deferred maintenance and repairs along the 202-kilometre UNESCO world heritage site identified in a 2012 asset review.

Pattullo Bridge closures coming in summer 2016

Motorists will be left with few options after TransLink announced Thursday it will be restricting traffic on the Pattullo Bridge for 18 months to undertake $100 million in major repairs next summer. TransLink acknowledges many drivers will be forced to take the tolled Port Mann Bridge, the Alex Fraser Bridge or find alternate routes.

Thunder Bay city council awaits details on funding event centre

Thunder Bay city councillors are hoping a new provincial funding scheme could help pay for the proposed event centre. At a recent meeting, council opted to hold off on an upcoming report on the event centre. The report was due in a few weeks, but the hope is the province will officially announce a new program later this fall for infrastructure funding. City manager Tim Commisso said more details about the Building Ontario Up program should be known in a few weeks.

McGill gets $100 million in research infrastructure support

The Government of Canada recently announced a national investment of $333 million for research infrastructure through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Ten projects submitted by McGill and its hospital-affiliated research institutes have received a total of $30 million in funding, which will be matched by the Government of Quebec.

Futuristic bio-concrete that heals itself could be the savior of Toronto’s deteriorating Gardiner expressway. The revolutionary material uses bacteria and a healing agent that reacts with water to form limestone to fix its own cracks. It's been developed with decaying roads such as the Gardiner in mind.
