At the 2018 CSCE Annual Conference the President’s Task Force held an interactive panel discussion. Within the theme of the 2018 Conference, this panel addressed several serious, urgent and growing issues for the profession, and for society: a) Sustainability and Innovation; b) Inclusivity and Social Justice; and c) Accessibility & Universal Design of the Built Environment. The intent was to build awareness and motivation within the CSCE to address these issues, identify where the profession may be “missing the boat,” and what may lie ahead if not addressed.

Winnipeg's roads already take a pounding but a ground-shaking technology is now being applied to the city's pavement in hopes it will help plan more efficient road repairs in the future.
"This technology can really detect whether this concrete is performing accordingly or if there's cracks and damage under the surface of the concrete," said Ahmed Shalaby, a civil engineering professor at the University of Manitoba and the university's municipal infrastructure chair.

It’s been five years since southern Alberta was hit by a 100-year flood event that saw heavy rainfall contribute to the worst flood in the province’s history and one of the costliest disasters ever experienced in Canada.
This summer, a University of Calgary researcher is embarking on a climate change adaptation demonstration project to try and prevent or at least reduce the impact of the type of flooding that occurred through better water management.
For years, those living in the downtown area of Whitecourt, Alta., have been plagued by an unpleasant odour, a phenomenon that only worsens during the summertime.
Those affected include ballpark users, nearby neighbourhoods and anyone driving on Flats Road with their window rolled down. It has gotten to the point where affected residents have started their own Facebook page, “Whitecourt Stop the Stink!”

Montreal has unveiled plans to compensate retailers and other companies hurt by lengthy construction work, raising hopes among business groups that other Canadian municipalities will follow suit.
Mayor Valérie Plante’s administration recently vowed to help businesses mitigate the impact of work projects undertaken by the city, which have ballooned in Montreal of late. Among the measures announced, the administration said it would earmark $25 million over six years to reimburse businesses that have suffered from disruption. Each business can claim a maximum of $30,000 a year, the city said.
