Another Successful CSCE Capstone Competition

Twelve teams from across the country travelled to Regina to participate in the 3rd annual CSCE Capstone Competition. Teams presented their final year design project with a poster and two minute presentation. The winner was Polytechnique Montreal

Un autre Concours Capstone réussi
SCGC
Le troisième concours annuel Capstone de la SCGC eut lieu le 31 mai 2015 au Congrès annuel de la SCGC à Régina. Des équipes de 12 écoles différentes de partout au pays y ont participé et ont présenté leurs projets de conception de dernière année avec une affiche et une presentation de deux minutes. Les juges venant de l'industrie furent très impressionnés par le niveau de professionnalisme et les connaissances de toutes les équipes et ont du mal à sélectionner les lauréats.

The CSCE President's Award recognizes excellence among Student Chapters. This year, the Student Affairs Committee reviewed 22 applications and decided that the University of British Columbia was the best student chapter for the past school year. Click "Read More" to see the other winners.

CSCE Student Paper Competition Winners Honoured in Regina
CSCE
Winners of the CSCE Student Paper Competition were announced at the Student Awards Luncheon at the CSCE Annual Conference in Regina, SK. Local student, Nathan Bruce of the University of Regina took home top honours with his paper titled "User-Updateable Municipal Benchmark Database for the City of Regina."

Quebec allows lumber to be used in construction of buildings up to 12 storeys

The Quebec government is hoping to give a shot in the arm to the province's forestry sector by allowing lumber to be used in the construction of buildings up to 12 storeys tall. Premier Philippe Couillard says regulation changes were developed in consultation with the provincial agency responsible for the building code and with FPInnovations, a research institute.

Brookfield Infrastructure Partners tracks value in Asciano

Brookfield Infrastructure Partners chief executive Sam Pollock says BIP buys assets that can achieve returns "commensurate with their risk profile". That helps explain how it can offer a big premium for the Asciano rail and container group and still pay less than other investors have paid for Australian infrastructure assets.

Blowback on Ontario wind projects mounting

According to a release from Wind Concerns Ontario, more than 90 communities have now declared themselves to be unwilling hosts to huge power generation projects using wind turbines. Recently, the municipality of Nation, just east of Ottawa, reversed its support, and the Town of Essex declared it wants no more wind turbines.

On deck: Repairing Nova Scotia's bridges

The steel arch truss East River Bridge has served its time well for almost six decades in the rural community of Sheet Harbour on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. But nearing the end of its lifespan, the bridge is being replaced with a 183-metre crossing. The new crossing, being built by Dexter Construction, is a steel box girder design with a concrete deck. It will run immediately south of the old bridge, connected to realigned roads to improve highway safety. The total cost is $19 million.

The UK is testing out roads that charge electric cars as they go

A trial in England is hoping to significantly boost the range of electric cars by introducing roads that can charge the vehicles as they drive along them. Unless you happen to own a Tesla and live near a supercharging station, the current battery life of electric cars doesn't go incredibly far. While electric cars may get 260 miles to a full charge, gas-guzzling cars can get 300 miles or more.
