Lifelong Learning / Formation Continue
Montreal, Quebec, Moncton — November 12, 13, 15, 2018
La formation est présentée en anglais.
The CSCE and the Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC) have developed this course on the new changes to the 2014 edition of the CSA S304, which are viewed as a substantial improvement to the 2004 standard. Bennett Banting, Ph.D., P.Eng., Masonry Research and Development Engineer at the Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC), presents a detailed overview of these changes as well as design examples that illustrate how masonry seismic design has evolved to meet the requirements of the 2015 NBCC.
The CSCE is pleased to offer you new Lifelong Learning opportunities through our e-learning program. Hosted in the EIC e-learning Centre, the program includes courses and recorded webinars and a free trial presentation. Please click here for full details.

|Dr. Easa receives the IAAM Medal for 2018 from IAAM Secretary General, Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, at the European Advanced Materials Congress, held in Stockholm, Sweden
Dr. Said Easa, a past CSCE Board member, has been honoured with the prestigious IAAM Medal for 2018 from the International Association of Advanced Materials (over 50,000 members from 139 countries) for his “notable and outstanding research in the Advanced Materials Science & Technology.”
The award (medal and certificate) was presented to Dr. Easa by the IAAM Secretary General, Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, during the award ceremony at the European Advanced Materials Congress on August 21, 2018, Stockholm, Sweden. The Congress included four symposiums, attended by 700 participants. The title of Dr. Easa’s presentation at the congress was “New Superpave Asphalt Mix Design Method Considering Uncertainty.”
Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) is a multi-million joint US-Canada project (1988-1993) and is currently the predominantly design method. The method consists of five complex phases: select binder, select trial (aggregate) blends, evaluate trial blends, select design binder content, and check moisture susceptibility. Surprisingly, uncertainty was considered only in Phase 1. Recognizing this gap last year, Dr. Easa has incorporated uncertainty into Phases 2-5 and published four papers (one for each phase) in the Journal of Testing and Evaluation, American Society of Testing and Materials. The research was well received by the pavement design community.
|CSCE Fellow and Distinguished Professor Emeritus Ralph Haas receives the U of Alberta's honorary doctor of science degree
Ralph Haas is known in the engineering world as “the father of pavement asset management.” His pioneering concepts and technologies have resulted in better-performing, safer and less costly road networks. The author of 12 books and numerous technical articles on pavement and infrastructure asset management, he is also an educator whose students have become leaders in transportation agencies, consultancies and universities. Haas is a member of the Order of Canada, fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals, and U of A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
|'Theory and Practice of Water and Wastewater Treatment'
The second edition of the popular textbook, "Theory and Practice of Water and Wastewater Treatment," (John Wiley & Sons) will be available by the end of August, just in time for the Fall semester. Co-authors are Ronald Droste and Ronald Gehr, both fellows of CSCE. The book has been fully updated and is suitable as a senior-level undergraduate text, thoroughly covering both water and wastewater treatment. Included is a Lite version of the GPS-X wastewater treatment modelling software. Available as an e-book and hard cover, with solutions manual for instructors.
The Canadian Red Cross is looking to expand its register of professionals who work in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) field with international field experience that can be eventually deployed as delegates in responses in Canada and abroad.

CSA S157-17 / S157.1-17 Strength Design in Aluminum was published in late 2017. It is available in both English and French @ http://shop.csa.ca/en/canada/structures/s157-17s1571-17/invt/27007262017. This standard applies to the design, fabrication, erection, and inspection of aluminum alloy members and assemblies. It is for building applications, but it is written in a form that it may be used for all types of aluminum load-bearing components or assemblies.

With an industry that seems to be lacking women professionals, we had the honour to talk to Zey Emir, a professional engineer and construction expert, who is the current chair of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), and also the president of the large national consulting company, Revay & Associates Ltd.
While women are still facing many barriers in the construction industry, Emir discusses with us the changes across the Canadian construction industry landscape, her experience with the industry, and her thoughts on how being a woman has influenced her work and experience.
Students in UPEI's faculty of sustainable design engineering have a new 3-D metal printer to learn from.
"This is one of maybe a handful of 3-D metal printers across the country," said assistant professor Grant McSorley.
"It's very rare that a grad student gets the opportunity to work with one of these, to get hands-on training on something like this."

An engineering firm has recommended the township spend $4.5 million to upgrade and extend the sanitary sewer network that serves Colborne's industrial park.
The work is necessary because the system is at or near capacity, which increases the risk of it failing at some point, Robert Jackson, an engineer with D.M. Wills Associates Ltd., told council in a presentation of the draft municipal environmental assessment report he has prepared.
Since moving to Canada from Iran in 1979 to pursue her master’s degree, Gina Parvaneh Cody has been a trailblazer in the male-dominated field of engineering: she was the first woman to earn a PhD in building engineering from Concordia University and the first to scale Toronto’s construction cranes as a machine inspector. She enjoyed a successful career spanning three decades that saw her collect accolades and ascend to the executive chair position at her engineering firm, which Profit magazine once named one of Canada’s most profitable woman-owned companies.
The latest tender for work that is part of the multi-year, $100 million rehabilitation project on the Centennial Bridge has been cancelled and no one is saying why.
The tender was for rehabilitation work on 12 piers numbered from nine to 20 at an engineer's estimated cost for work of $17,422,871.
