Dr. Todd Chan awarded China Friendship Award

On Sept 29 of this year Dr Todd Chan was given the China Friendship Award by Vice Premier Ma Kai in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This award is China's most prestigious accolade for "foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social progress."

The International Affairs Committee (IAC) of the Canadian Society for
Civil Engineering (CSCE) invites you to submit articles for a special
issue of the Canadian Civil Engineer (CCE). The theme of this special
issue of the CCE is "Lessons from India." Limited number of articles
will be published in this issue. The focus of this issue is to showcase
the major advancements that have taken place in India in the Civil
Engineering field and to highlight lessons for Canadian Civil Engineers.
The articles are typically only 3-4 pages long.
Abstracts of articles should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org by December 1st, 2014. Limited number of authors will be invited to submit full articles. Full articles due by January 31st, 2015.

The Cement Association of Canada (CAC) is conducting research for the
development of the next edition of the Concrete Design Handbook (CDH)
through means of an online survey. We'd love to hear from CDH users to
better appreciate their needs. This will help us make any necessary
improvements or changes to the next edition of the Concrete Design
The survey should take less than 5 minutes and responses are completely anonymous. The survey will run until November 28th.
The online survey can be accessed at http://fluidsurveys.com/s/cdh/english/ or through the CAC website at www.cement.ca.

Infrastructure savings if more people cycle
Fifty million dollars for bike lanes? Where'd that figure come from? Hamilton's roads program costs over $300 million every year. Hamilton's infrastructure is crumbling because taxpayers aren't paying enough to satisfy our asphalt addiction. Taxpayers would be required to pay thousands of dollars every year (over and above what they pay now) to properly fund this infrastructure.
China set to invest 2050 billion in UK infrastructure by 2025
China is set to invest £105bn in British infrastructure by 2025, with energy, property and transport the biggest recipients, according to research.
The world's second-biggest economy has already invested £11.7bn in Britain between 2005 and 2013, including a 10 per cent stake in Thames Water, Britain's biggest water utility, held by the China Investment Corporation, the sovereign wealth fund.
Companies shortlisted for Seneca College King Campus expansion
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Seneca College have shortlisted three teams to design, build and finance the Seneca College King Campus phase one expansion project in King City. The shortlisted teams, each of which includes a developer/builder, designer and a financial advisor, will be invited to respond to a request for proposals in late 2014.

Update to Canadian Infrastructure Report Card is Underway
The first Canadian Infrastructure Report Card (CIRC) was released in
September 2012. Work has begun on the 2015 edition, including the
release of the CIRC Asset Management Primer which aims to clarify the
importance of asset management as well as sharing best practices. The
CSCE is a proud sponsor of this initiative and is represented by
President Reg Andres and Chair of the Infrastructure Renewal Committee,
Nick Larson on the project steering committee.

fut publié en septembre 2012. Les travaux ont commencé sur l’édition

Approximately 80 Niagara Region Grade 11 and 12 students — including between 10 to 15 females — received an upfront tour of construction sites in their area in early October, as part of the region’s first-ever Construction Day event. Highlights included a visit to a new home site, watching a bridge being built, and witnessing rock being blasted at a quarry.
Sponsored by the Ontario Civil Construction Careers Institute (OCCCI) and the Heavy Construction Association of Regional Niagara (HCARN) with the support of the region's two school boards, the event was designed to illustrate the career opportunities in civil infrastructure.

University of Waterloo approves $88 million E7 engineering building build

Construction of the $88 million Engineering 7 (E7) building at the University of Waterloo was recently approved by its board of governors. The university's Building and Properties Committee proposed the 230,000-square-foot, seven-storey building to house Waterloo Engineering. E7 will accommodate growth from the recently launched biomedical engineering program and expansion of the Faculty of Engineering's mechatronics engineering program.
Ontario government is holding up infrastructure plan funding
Finance Minister Joe Oliver says the Ontario government is causing delays in the federal government's plan to devote nearly $11 billion to infrastructure investments in the province over the coming years.
Engineering firm found guilty for building problems that led to condo evacuations
A provincial court judge has found an engineering firm guilty of building code infractions that endangered the structural integrity of a downtown Calgary condominium complex, forced the evacuation of several businesses and caused millions of dollars in damage.
In a decision released Monday, Judge Heather Lamoureux said Williams Engineering Canada’s failure to properly oversee parkade repairs at Rocky Mountain Court led to three violations of the Alberta Building Code: creating unsafe conditions in the building; failing to notify public of the unsafe conditions; and failing to notify authorities.
Capital works program to go toward repairing infrastructure, city
Montreal will boost the amount it usually plans to invest in its aging infrastructure by close to $1 billion over three years, dipping into its operating budget and increasing its debt to repair its roads and bridges, water mains and heritage buildings.
