Is a trend really a trend if it repeats year after year? ... “Design-build is no longer an ‘alternative’ delivery method,” Preston Haskell, founder of Haskell Construction and co-founder of the Design-Build Institute of America, told attendees of the association’s 25th anniversary event this year.
FMI Corporation, the leading provider of management consulting and investment banking services to engineering and construction, infrastructure and the built environment, is pleased to announce the release of its latest research report, "The Growing World of Design-Build." This white paper is based on research conducted for the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) and highlights key trends in the North American design-build market. The author also explains why many owners are transitioning to this project delivery method and provides practical recommendations for engineering and construction (E&C) firms to set themselves up for successful design-build projects.

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) has become chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee
DeFazio has been preaching the infrastructure funding gospel for years, and, thus far, has been unsuccessful in his quest to convince colleagues to back a measure that would provide sustainable funding guarantees for transportation officials around the country.
While the new Congress and the White House kick off 2019 in the midst of a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump and the leadership of the U.S. House and Senate have acknowledged that authorizing funding for infrastructure projects will be atop their legislative priorities. After it abandoned its infrastructure agenda shortly after proposing a 10-year, $1.5 trillion plan in February 2018, the White House appears ready to try pushing a plan again this year with a divided legislative branch.

Big news for Gulf Coast drivers. Congressman Bradley Byrne says we will have all of the approvals from the Federal government by this Spring and then comes construction. "We should be breaking ground on a new bridge this time next year," says Congressman Bradley Byrne. The highly anticipated new river toll bridge will take around five years to complete.
Infrastructure work may be heating up again with whisperings of President Donald Trump’s administration reinitiating the $1 trillion infrastructure plan promised during his 2016 presidential campaign. The administration claims to be willing to increase the federal share of the infrastructure program significantly from the 20% referenced in previous iterations — a move that may draw Democrats back into negotiations. Whether federal legislation will come to fruition or not in 2019, investments nonetheless are being made in the space. A December Wall Street Journal analysis of state and local revenue collection and spending found that public agencies are increasing their infrastructure investments and making headway on long-delayed projects. Much of that money is tax revenue stemming from increased consumer spending.
The Bulldog investigative team has uncovered something startling about our water systems. Our research found that the state of Georgia needs $12 billion in water and wastewater infrastructure improvements over the next 20 years. ... "We simply don’t have enough revenue to meet the demands of our drinking water systems,” says Greg Diloreto, infrastructure expert with the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Joe Bates takes a closer look at a handful of airport development projects making headlines in the US in the final quarter of 2018.
A precast concrete system is more than a material. It’s a solution. Versatile and resilient. Efficient and durable. With precast concrete, your vision can go far outside the box.
Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia, an affiliate of The Cordish Cos., has selected Gilbane Building Co. as general contractor for its $700 million development in Philadelphia's stadium district. “Gilbane was a natural fit for this project because the team is so experienced in the hospitality industry, and they bring a real understanding of our vision,” Joe Weinberg, managing partner of The Cordish Cos., said in a statement. Gilbane will build the 1.5-million-square-foot sports, entertainment and casino resort, which will feature a boutique hotel with more than 200 rooms, dining and live entertainment venues and a 2,700-space parking garage. Gilbane will first demolish an existing Holiday Inn and other buildings occupying the site of the future Live! development.
The Phoenix City Council and McCarthy Building Cos. have entered into agreements worth up to nearly $240 million that will see McCarthy provide construction manager at risk services for a new $310 million Southwest Airlines concourse at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. McCarthy’s services will include subcontractor procurement, construction, scheduling, quality control and closeout for an eighth concourse for Southwest.
McCarthy Building Companies Inc. is pleased to announce that Mike Gonzalez, director of McCarthy's Southwest region, has been tapped to serve as the chair for the Arizona chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America effective Jan. 1, 2019. He will be transitioning with the current Chair Wylie Bearup, P.E., Ph.D., a professor at Arizona State University's Del E. Webb School of Construction.

OSHA can cite general contractors who fail to control hazardous conditions at multi-employer worksites, even if those conditions do not directly affect their own employees, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit recently ruled. The decision will prompt a review of a 2017 case in which a Denver Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Commission administrative judge ruled that GCs cannot be held liable for the safety violations of subcontractors. The Appeals Court said that the case law on which the OSH judge based the decision was obsolete. The 5th Circuit said more recent rulings have indicated that a general contractor could be held responsible for safety on the multi-employer site as a “controlling employer.”
Bendable concrete, also known as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), has been around since the early 1990s. But a team of researchers at Louisiana State University (LSU) is close to finally bringing the material to market. Scientists at LSU have been developing and testing an ECC mixture that has proven far superior to traditional concrete. ECCs can withstand the kind of deformation stress that would crack regular concrete — stress that is 100 to 500 times greater than regular concrete can handle.
A Spokane architecture firm is now printing 3-D models of their building designs, including their project in Spokane's Perry District. Uptic Studios decided to incorporate 3-D printing into their design process as a way to save some time, and give clients another perspective on their designs. "Some people struggle reading two dimensional plans," Project Manager and Designer Tyson Able said. "When you can bring it to life three dimensionally, with a printer like this, people start to understand space a little bit easier."
