Several of Lansdale, Pa.'s long-awaited road construction projects could come much closer to completion in 2011. That was the message delivered by borough Utilities Director Jake Ziegler to council's Public Works committee recently, as he updated the committee on several projects including the Vine-Wood Street connector project funded by state Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative money. Kevin Keith's career with the Missouri Department of Transportation spans more than 25 years. Since being appointed director of the department in November, he has been working to convince Missourians it's time to invest more in infrastructure. Most recently, Keith served as MoDOT's chief engineer, and engineering is something he says he's know he wanted to do from an early age. After receiving his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, one of his first projects took him to Jefferson City to oversee the construction of its second Missouri River bridge. Haskell designs Alachua, Fla., research center

The Haskell Co. has completed the design of a $5.5 million construction education and research center and expects to complete construction of the Alachua County, Fla., facility in Fall 2011. The 31,000-square-foot facility constructed by the Jacksonville-based design-build company will be the headquarters for the National Center for Construction Education and Research. More
Great River Medical Center in Iowa to build new long-term care center

Great River Medical Center's Board of Directors has approved construction of a new long-term-care center on the hospital's West Burlington, Iowa campus. It will replace the existing Klein Center at 2910 Madison Ave., Burlington, Iowa. The new center will be built along the lake on the south side of the campus between the main parking lot and Great River Hospice House. Although it will be home to nearly 160 people, living spaces will be divided into about 10 "neighborhoods," each with a kitchen, community space and private bedrooms. More
Project manager discusses widening southbound I-81 in Virginia

The state has hired CH2M Hill to design and build a widening project along five miles of southbound Interstate 81 on Christiansburg Mountain in Virginia. The project will affect motorists who commute between the Roanoke and New River valleys, truck drivers hauling freight, leisure travelers and others who must cross the mountain. But it will result in a much wider, safer road when the work is done in a couple of years. More

Another step forward: WSDOT signs contract for SR 99 bored tunnel with Seattle Tunnel Partners

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) recently signed a contract with Seattle Tunnel Partners to design and build the SR 99 bored tunnel – the preferred alternative for replacing the seismically unsafe Alaskan Way Viaduct along Seattle's downtown waterfront. In a ceremony recently at the Port of Seattle, Washington State Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond signed the design-build contract with Seattle Tunnel Partners representatives Fernando González Alcañiz and Jack Frost. Design-build combines project design and construction in a single contract. More
