Metrodome Demolition Takes Down Concrete Ring in Minneapolis
Road closures, vibration, dust and noise hit downtown Minneapolis due to the demolition of the Metrodome's final ring beam. The concrete ring beam came down with use of controlled explosive charges. Structural and demolition experts revised the original demolition plan after a section of the ring beam collapsed Feb. 23 out of sequence. The team determined that explosives were the safest way to demolish the last portion of the beam.

Wilshire Grand Project Sets Guinness World Record in Los Angeles

The Wilshire Grand project set a new Guinness World record recently when it kicked off construction for the largest continuous concrete pour in history, a spokesman for the project said. Beginning Feb. 15, more than 2,100 truckloads of 21,200 cubic yards of concrete weighing 82 million pounds — the weight of 250 blue whales, the world’s largest mammal — were poured to form the building’s foundation on the northwest corner of Seventh and Figueroa streets.
Three Rival Design Plans Submitted for New State Patrol Home in Olympia, Wash.; Public Review is March 19

Three teams of architects and contractors have formally submitted their rival proposals for the next state office building planned in Olympia. The state Department of Enterprise Services said it received the detailed proposals from three finalists selected last November to draw up details – all part of what's called a design-build process.

Metcalf Court Decision Good for Design-Builders

On Feb. 11, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a major opinion overturning the Court of Federal Claims opinion in Metcalf v. US. The ruling that was overturned had such broad, negative implications for the construction industry that DBIA, AIA, AGC and ABC all submitted amicus or “friend of the court” briefs urging that the case be overturned.
Federal Design-Build Legislation Evolves
Recently, some proposed amendments have emerged to a federal bill DBIA has been working to pass into law. The Design-Build Efficiency and Jobs Act (H.R. 2750) would codify a DBIA Design-Build Best Practice for federal two-step design-build projects, and limit the use of single-step design-build.
