Washington state may look into private bridge funding
The Columbian Share
As engineers finalize the design of a new Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River, the next big step will be coming up with the money to build it. Planners have long anticipated a three-way split between the federal government, the two states and local revenue generated by bridge tolls to cover the $3.6 billion project, which also includes the extension of a light-rail line into Clark County as well as dozens of elevated ramps and overpasses on five miles of I-5 in Oregon and Washington. Dallas is going to need private-sector partners to design, build, operate and maintain streetcars
Dallas Observer Share
Recently, Dallas is having enough problems funding the 1.6-mile streetcar starter line from Union Station to Methodist Hospital (or close to). So how does it expect to stretch track over more than 40 miles in and three miles around downtown Dallas, which is the ultimate goal? Easy, says Assistant City Manager A.C. Gonzalez: Let's turn it over to the private sector. More
Map infrastructure in 3-D

Dallas must do without Calatrava Bridge design
Three "signature bridges" were planned to boost the Dallas skyline, but it looks as though the city will only have one. State transportation officials are moving ahead with an Interstate 30 bridge over the Trinity River without the design of noted architect Santiago Calatrava. "We don't have the money to build the bridge the way he designed it," Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm said. More
Designing laboratory controls
Consulting-Specifying Engineer Share
Laboratory facility engineers face significant design challenges in meeting the criteria of laboratory functionality, energy efficiency, sustainable design, health and safety codes, reliability, and long-term system flexibility. Conflicts among requirements, code updates, and code interpretations add to the complexity of many lab projects and result in many unique solutions. HVAC system design and corresponding building automation systems (BAS) are likewise becoming increasingly complicated. More
