DBIA Releases First Full Set of Model Bond Forms Specifically for Design-Build Projects
DBIA has announced the release of a full set of warranty bonds, proposal bonds and payment and performance bonds specifically for design-build projects. The new bond forms are the best model documents to use on design-build projects, serving as a fair and balanced basis for Design-Build Done Right. They are the first and only set of bond forms co-authored by designers and builders and endorsed by surety industry leaders.

Scholarships Offered – Design-Build Done Right for Educators
Specifically tailored for educators, the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) will host a Design-Build Educator Workshop to help university faculty understand the key elements and value of design-build, as well as how to incorporate design-build best practices into their existing curriculum. This will be the second year DBIA has hosted this workshop with support from the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF). In 2014, the demand exceeded our funds, so DBIA and CPF are pleased to offer it again in 2015.

DBIA Seeks Student Teams for Design-Build Competition

The annual competition closely follows how real-life design-build projects are procured — it's a two-step competition, with teams responding to RFQs, short-listed finalists responding to RFPs, and a final in-person presentation at the 2015 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Denver.

Paul Ryan seeking $10 billion for highway fund

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is working on a short-term fix for the Highway Trust Fund. The Wisconsin Republican said he is running the numbers on a $10 billion patch that would keep road and infrastructure money flowing for the rest of 2015.

GOP senator backs plan to tax corporate profits for roads
The Hill
Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, is co-sponsoring legislation to tax up to $2 trillion in corporate revenue that is currently stored in foreign banks to pay for domestic infrastructure projects. The measure, which is sponsored by Sens. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, and Barbara Boxer, D-California, would offer companies a 6.5 percent tax rate on profits they return voluntarily to the U.S. to boost federal transportation funding that is currently scheduled to expire on May 31.

$89 Million Construction Contract for Federal Courthouse in Mobile, Alabama
The federal government has awarded the main contract to build a new federal courthouse in downtown Mobile, meaning that a project more than a decade in the making may finally break ground by the end of the year. The $89 million contract went to a team led by W.G. Yates & Sons, which will oversee the construction project from its office in Biloxi, Mississippi. A pair of architectural firms from Washington, D.C., URS and Hartman-Cox Architects, are also part of the team.

China BIM Users Find Business and Project Value, Says Analysis

China-based construction industry firms that use building information modeling (BIM) in at least 30 percent of their work are bullish on the technology to boost both business and project management benefits, says an industry survey of some 350 architects and contractors. Nearly all respondents work exclusively in China, about 85 percent said they were BIM users, and 94 percent report at least some “meaningful benefit,” says the SmartMarket Report analysis by Dodge Data & Analytics, the parent of ENR.

HOK Unveils Renderings and Video of New St. Louis NFL Stadium
Building Design+Construction
Designs by HOK for a new riverfront NFL stadium in downtown St. Louis, Mo., have been unveiled. In a statement released by HOK, retractable seating in the corners will allow the stadium to be used for FIFA or Major League Soccer matches, as it expands the field to a FIFA-regulated 120 yards long and 75 yards wide. In addition to sporting events, the stadium will be an “amphitheater-style setting for concerts.”

Balfour Beatty Construction Awarded Design-Build Contract for New Correctional Facility for Kern County, California

Kern County has selected Balfour Beatty Construction to design and construct a new $100.5 million addition to the Kern County Justice Facility located in Bakersfield, California. The 215,000-square-foot facility is expected to create 350 to 400 jobs for the local community, including a contractual target goal to subcontract 25 percent of design and construction services to local businesses with 35 percent of the labor supplied by local workers.

Keene, California Council Selects Design-Build Team to Build City Hall

The design-build team that built the addition to Keene High School and Elementary School and is designing the master plan for KISD, will also build City Hall. The City Council selected the team of architect Callahan & Freeman and the construction company of Speed Fab Crete to build the proposed City Hall on about four acres located on the west of Old Betsy Road between the Beeson Car Wash and Northside Station.

Leadership and Brunelleschi Award Nominations Open
DBIA is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Awards. The Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor DBIA bestows, and is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and the advancement of integrated design-build project delivery. Past winners include Craig Unger, DBIA; Michael C. Loulakis, Esq., DBIA; Dr. Robert Tener; and Walker Lee Evey.

The Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Awards are given to leaders who advocate for and promote the merits of Design-Build Done RightTM in six different categories: owner, industry professional, legislator, academic faculty, students and – for the first time this year – young professionals (age 35 or younger). In submitting nominations, specific attention should be focused on the nominee’s efforts and achievements in furthering the understanding and use of design-build as an effective and efficient delivery method, which will vary depending on the position they occupy within the industry.
