"Considering the amount of traffic that goes through that corridor and the general public living next to it, time is of the essence," said Richard Thomas of the Design-Build Institute of America, which advocates for the policy around the country. "I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to give the city this kind of tool."

Driving down system cost, Siphonic Horizontal pipe installed dead level, NO Pitch. Smaller diameter pipe generates cost savings and reduction in consumption of raw materials. Pipe routing controlled by the designer, not impacted by restrictions of pitched pipe. Less Ponding creates safer roof designs. High efficient roof drains reduce the number of drains and roof penetrations. System performance videos available. READ MORE

Agencies in three states are in the beginning stages of changing how large-scale road projects like these will someday be done and redone, moving away from traditional paper plans, onsite staking and employee-based monitoring to automate processes and enhance precision and safety with smart devices. They're already seeing returns on investment — in the case of an Idaho pilot, saving one construction season and several hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in California and Colorado, working to keep employees safe, virtually monitor drivers and fully integrate GPS.

Pending one final approval from the federal government, construction on a $725 million Utah freeway will begin in less than three years. Federal and state highway officials Thursday released an environmental analysis identifying the route for the proposed 19-mile West Davis Corridor designed to serve commuters in the Salt Lake City area.
Illinois road construction projects that were shut down by the budget impasse will get started again sometime next week, now that the legislature has passed a major income tax increase and spending plan.

D.C. Water has awarded its largest contract to date — a $580 million design-build plan for a 5-mile tunnel that will help avoid combined sewer overflow into the Anacostia River. A joint venture of Salini Impregilo and S.A. Healy will design and construct the tunnel. Work is expected to begin in September with a completion date of 2023. Along with controlling sewer outflow, the tunnel construction is expected to reduce the chance of flooding in the areas it serves, including flood-prone sections of Rhode Island Avenue.

Walk down the halls of the Home2 Suites when it opens this fall in Mount Pleasant, and it won't seem much different than any other hotel. But just beneath the surface, the hotel is breaking new ground, developers say. Its corridors will be supported by cross-laminated timber, a relatively new form of lumber that hasn't been tried before in a commercial building in South Carolina.
Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are using a novel form of x-rays to detect corrosion, the primary danger threatening the health of the steel framework within the nation’s bridges, roads, and other aging physical infrastructure. This noninvasive “spectral fingerprint” technique reveals the corrosion of concrete-encased steel before it can cause any significant degradation of the structure it supports. This could help in defining the Trump administration’s proposed $1 trillion project to rebuild and maintain U.S. infrastructure.
