Despite the tough politics, 26 states have raised taxes on motor fuels in the past four years. The eight states that raised taxes this year include Tennessee and South Carolina, deep-red states dominated by fiscal conservatives.
“We’ve seen more bipartisan agreement on raising gas taxes than almost any other tax out there,” said Jared Walczak, senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank in Washington, D.C.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings wants a new group with a "single-minded focus" to make a long-awaited park along the Trinity River a reality.
Next week, officials will brief the City Council on a plan to create a "local government corporation" to take on the Trinity River park project. The public-private partnership would be responsible for working out the details of planning and building the new park, which would span 200 acres between the Margaret McDermott Bridge and the Ron Kirk Bridge.

Hicks credits the success of the projects to the city’s utilization of an innovative design-build process — a comprehensive project delivery method in which the design and construction contractors simultaneously work as a team to complete the project.

Driving down system cost, Siphonic Horizontal pipe installed dead level, NO Pitch. Smaller diameter pipe generates cost savings and reduction in consumption of raw materials. Pipe routing controlled by the designer, not impacted by restrictions of pitched pipe. Less Ponding creates safer roof designs. High efficient roof drains reduce the number of drains and roof penetrations. System performance videos available. READ MORE

Cuomo and other design-build advocates have called the Tappan Zee project an example of how the delivery method can shorten a schedule and bring a project to completion without budget overruns. This was in spite of a few obstacles like a squabble over what class of union workers had to be employed on the project and a crane collapse during pile-driving operations.
Leidos is seeking interested bidders for the Antarctic Infrastructure and Modernization for Science (AIMS) project, with an RFP anticipated in October. The project also earned the Envision Platinum award for sustainable infrastructure from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. “HDR designed the streetcar as a fully integrated transportation system to support the city’s focus on Main Street as a key corridor for sustainable economic development, and to foster a sense of community and identity,” said HDR Area Manager Joe Drimmel.
The 2.2 million-square-foot public-private partnership, initiated by the Texas A&M University System, ranks as the largest student housing development of its kind in the nation.
A&M System Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Phillip Ray said the project, which is being overseen by developer Servitas and was constructed by The Weitz Company, is the latest in a growing list of "legacy projects" to come together under Chancellor John Sharp.

The tunneling is not even the toughest part of the job. “This is a utilities job,” says Richard McLane, chief mechanical engineer with Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture of Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Bros. Inc. “Tunneling is about 6% of the total project.”

The chance to help erect a structure like the signature copper dome atop the soaring Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral might come along once in a lucky builder’s life. Harry L. McKinney helped build it twice. … “Virtual design helps prevent problems in the field,” McKinney said, and reduces surprises. Builders hate surprises.
This month the International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS) launches. The global initiative creates a common language for the sector and defines a universal system for presenting the cost of construction projects, allowing comparisons to be made on a like-for-like basis between countries, ultimately enhancing transparency, investor confidence and public trust in the sector.

When it comes to building materials, the latest developments increasingly revolve around prefabrication and modular building technologies. this also includes the use of innovative materials, unique construction methods and the latest in sustainable ideas. Kate Harris, CEO of Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA), says it would be fantastic to have more prefabricated construction that incorporates insulation better than we have done in the past.
