VDOT welcomed residents to the first open house for their six design-build projects at Monticello High School Tuesday afternoon. The open house showcased the preliminary designs for six road improvement projects throughout Albemarle County, which were approved for SMART SCALE and Highway Safety Improvement Program funding last July. … John Stack, a resident of Keswick, said he's a fan of the idea for a diverging diamond because of how it can make the intersection a safer experience for drivers. "I think the diamond gives everyone a lot more room and fewer lights and the flow should be much better," said Stack. "You can run a lot more cars through there a lot more safer."

Three years ago, Georgia lawmakers raised nearly $1 billion a year for road and bridge construction. This year, they allowed 13 metro Atlanta counties to raise billions of dollars more for mass transit. The candidates for Georgia governor say more must be done to tackle traffic and improve transportation across the Peach State. But Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp offer different visions of what should be done and how to pay for it.

Later this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will recommend a multi-billion-dollar plan to help protect the Texas coast — the Houston area in particular — from hurricanes. When it will become a reality, however, is anyone’s guess.
MoDOT's planning meeting Wednesday at Remington Nature Center was the third stop on a nine-city tour around the state. "We have a $125 billion dollar asset that our citizens own,” MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna, told about 50 people gathered in a conference room. "But we have about 900 million to spend on it." McKenna noted MoDOT's planning process has always included stakeholders throughout the state. Wednesday's meeting scheduled four planning groups to make presentations, including the Mo-Kan Regional Council.

(a 2018 DBIA award winner) Ventura County Medical Center’s 248,000-square-foot replacement wing opened to patients in August 2017. The four-story building includes 119 hospital beds; an expanded emergency department; three intensive care units; surgery with advanced technology; labor, delivery and NICU departments; and a new pediatrics wing. The medical center is Ventura County’s first design-build project as well as the first design-build hospital constructed under California’s OSHPD jurisdiction from program. The design, by architecture firm HOK (Los Angeles), creates a cohesive aesthetic inspired by the local coastal landscape while blending the replacement wing with the existing campus buildings.

The city released what may be its most ambitious and detailed transportation plan yet on Wednesday. Called CONNECT, the seven-year plan lists goals, strategies and tactics that officials hope will address the city’s most pressing transportation challenges, including increased congestion, declining bus ridership and a bike commuting trend that’s gone flat.

Last year, The Miller Hull Partnership, a Seattle-based architecture firm, led a so-called Progressive Design-Build team — Arup, KPFF Consulting Engineers, GGN (landscape architect), O’Brien & Company (sustainability consultant), and Mortenson Construction — on the University of Washington’s West Campus Utility Plant (a 2017 DBIA Award Winner). The $35 million facility provides 4,500 tons of chiller capacity and six megawatts of emergency power; it can reach 10,500 tons of chiller capacity and 12 MW of emergency power without modifying the building.

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority Friday unanimously approved the awarding of the owner’s project manager contract for the city’s minor league ballpark project to Skanska USA Building Inc. … It provided construction services for Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, home of the New England Patriots, and MetLife Stadium (a 2011 DBIA Award Winner) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jet, among the many stadium/arena projects it has been involved with in the past.
But no matter how conscientious contractors may be, there is still a chance that something below the radar, also known as unforeseen site conditions, will reveal itself after the work starts. And if contractors aren't careful in how they handle these surprises, they could find themselves footing the bill for some very expensive extras. “Scope of work issues,” said John-Patrick Curran, a partner at Sive Paget & Riesel in New York, “are invariably the single largest sources of conflict between owners and contractors.”
The Pennsylvania Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) approved the update of its state building code, the Uniform Construction Code (UCC), based on the 2015 International Codes (I-Codes). The I-Codes are a family of modern, comprehensive and coordinated building codes used in all 50 states and in many other countries around the globe. They are updated regularly and take into account the latest health and safety technology and building science advancements.
Tomorrow's building material is here today. Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is durable, formable in diverse shapes and suitable for lightweight construction. As the name suggests, conventional TRC is reinforced with carbon or glass-fiber fabrics rather than steel. A research team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut WKI is now replacing these fabrics with eco-friendly natural fibers. These alternatives rival conventional concrete's performance, but leave a smaller carbon footprint, and cost less to make. Researchers will present a prototype of a natural fiber-reinforced concrete bridge at the BAU 2019 trade fair in Munich on January 14 to 19, 2019.

Hurricane Florence turned large sections of Interstates 95 and 40 into rivers, cutting off major north-south and east-west connections in the eastern part of the state. I-95 had been flooded for about 100 miles for nearly a week when floodwaters finally receded. North Carolina Department of Transportation workers and a contracting crew then immediately began making repairs. One of the tools in their kit was a polyurethane foam, which they had used after previous hurricanes had wreaked havoc on state highways.
