Construction Plans Get Under Way After Voters Okay Most Large Bond Issues
With voter approval of nearly all bond finance issues on ballots earlier this month, construction is poised to start on hundreds of millions worth of projects in water, education, health care, transportation, entertainment and other sectors. U.S. voters showed support for transportation improvements, approving 67 percent of initiatives that will add about $21 billion to project funds, says the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. The figure is slightly better than the 61 percent bond approval during the last mid-term election in 2010.
Design-Build Methods Approved for USA Parkway
The Nevada Department of Transportation board unanimously instructed staff to move forward with the USA Parkway project that will connect Highway 50 in Lyon County with Interstate 80 at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. Deputy NDOT Director John Terry told the board using the "design-build" process, the project can be completed as much as a year earlier than if the traditional bidding process were followed.
Voters Are Willing to Pay for Infrastructure. Is Congress?
Fawn Johnson writes, "Transportation issues like highway maintenance and transit growth suffer from a conundrum I like to call The Bigfoot Syndrome, so named for a phenomenon in newsrooms in which senior reporters horn in on junior reporters covering boring issues when stories on those lowlier beats get hot. We call it 'bigfooting.'"
U.S. Transportation Secretary Views South Dakota Rail Project
Rapid City Journal
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx rode over sections of rail track that had previously been repaired with federal help and rattled over portions that haven't been regularly used for years. About 42 miles of those mostly derelict tracks from Chamberlain to Presho will soon be restored with the help of a roughly $12 million federal grant. Rehabbing that stretch of railway will open up grain-shipping opportunities for farmers in south-central South Dakota who currently must use trucks to transport their grain to faraway railways.
I-49 Coalition Using Election to Boost Passage Between Louisiana Cities
In operation for just more than a year, the I-49 South Coalition is taking its message on the road and using upcoming state elections as a platform to promote the interstate portion that will connect Lafayette to New Orleans. The 20-member organization has already held two town hall meetings with gubernatorial candidates U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-Metairie, and most recently Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne.
Videos: The Bigness of Road and Bridge Construction
With all the wrangling on Capitol Hill these days regarding how to fund surface transportation infrastructure projects, we tend to forget the sheer size and scope of such undertakings – and thus why they cost so much money. Take the $6.4 billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, for example: a bridge that replaced a span originally built back in 1936 that required five years or more than 42,000 hours of work.

Clayco's Treehouse Adventures: Chasing Innovation
Mike Latiner points to design-build company Clayco's belief in innovation as the guiding force that led the Chicago-based firm to launch its Treehouse Adventures business incubator earlier this year. Real estate and design-build company Clayco has already made a big impact in Chicago. Last year, the company moved its headquarters from its long-time base in St. Louis to Chicago. Now the company is again making an impact in its new home city, launching Treehouse Adventures in Chicago, a private investment firm designed to provide financial backing to start-up companies.
Prefab Helps Valparaiso Student Residence Project Meet an Ambitious Deadline
Few colleges or universities have embraced prefabrication more wholeheartedly than Valparaiso (Ind.) University. The Lutheran-based institution completed a $27 million residence hall this past summer in which the structural elements were all precast. The modular bathroom pods were manufactured in and shipped from New Jersey.
