The project also includes a new utility office for the town, a series of five raw water wells, two deep injection wells and reuse of the reclaimed water. Construction of deep tunnel will reduce overflows and energy consumption

Site work has begun on an underground tunnel and pipeline designed by Black & Veatch for Johnson County Wastewater's Mill Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Shawnee, Kan. It will carry as much as 180 million gallons per day of treated wastewater nearly two miles, relying on gravity, to a discharge point downstream of a water intake on the Kansas River. When completed in late 2013, the tunnel will reduce the county's operating costs by eliminating the current need for electricity to pump the effluent.
