Employee Assistance Professionals Association
Each year, EAPA's annual awards program recognizes and celebrates the achievement of individuals and organizations who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to the EA profession and EAPA. Selection of award recipients is the responsibility of the EAPA Awards Committee. The 2019 awards will be presented at the EAPA 2019 Conference and EXPO in St. Louis, MO. Membership on the committee requires a time commitment of approximately four hours to review nominations and select award winners via conference call. You must be an EAPA member to serve, and committee members are not eligible to receive an individual award. Interested? Email a brief description of your current/previous roles as an EA professional to communications@eapassn.org. Deadline April 26.

The national dialogue was a mishmash of feeling.

The American Journal of Psychiatry
Insomnia is a prevalent and distressing issue, with approximately 30% of the population experiencing at least one symptom of insomnia and 6% of the population meeting criteria for an insomnia disorder. Historically, insomnia has been considered a secondary symptom of psychiatric disorders, leading to the unfortunate consequence of psychiatric treatment largely disregarding insomnia as a focus of therapy. However, a more recent large body of prospective studies has demonstrated a bidirectional relationship between insomnia and psychiatric disorders, with evidence supporting insomnia’s contribution to the development of depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, psychosis, and suicidality. Thus, the value of assessing and treating insomnia in the treatment and possible prevention of mental illness has come to the forefront in psychiatry.

Mental illness is pervasive in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For younger generations especially, major disorders can co-exist with burnout, a more generalized feeling of anxiety, stress and exhaustion that is prominent in overworked labor forces. Burned out workers can be less productive and less engaged — and their work stress can often catalyze job searches.

When the decision involves investments and spending, a solid business case and reliable evidence for return on investment is expected. However, while many executives have learned about the advantages of investing in a top-notch workforce, the data to drive investment in the mental health of employees can be more difficult to identify and understand.
