    Social media affords EA professionals the opportunity reach people in ways unimaginable a decade ago. Why is it that so few EA professionals and EAP companies have mastered this powerful resource? Technophobia? Mastering the technology is not the primary barrier. Lack of content is. The challenge is to learn how to position yourself as an EAP expert by creating clear, consistent EA-focused content. Once that has been accomplished, then it is time to select the social media delivery channel appropriate to your message.

    Experts find being ignored worse than being bullied

    The famous quote claims the only thing in life worse than being talked about, is not being talked about — and a new study may have proved this to be the case. Being ignored at work has been found to be worse for a person's health than people who are harassed or bullied. Researchers found that while most consider ostracism less harmful than bullying, feeling excluded is significantly more likely to lead job dissatisfaction, quitting and health problems.

    State laws ban employer access to workforce's social media

    This month, Louisiana joined nearly a dozen other states that have enacted laws that prohibit employers from requiring or penalizing workers who fail to fork over personal online account information. Thanks to the Personal Online Account Privacy Protection Act, all Louisiana-based public, private and educational employers are banned from retaliating against employees who do not provide usernames, passwords and other personal information.

    Australia launches campaign on corporate mental health

    Depression Not for Profit beyondblue has launched a national campaign in conjunction with the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance to encourage Australia's business leaders to take action on mental health. The move comes as a new report by PwC reveals that Australian businesses will receive an average return of $2.30 for every dollar they invest in effective workplace mental health strategies. The research, which looked at the impact of employees' mental health conditions on productivity, participation and compensation claims, also found that these conditions cost Australian employers at least $10.9 billion a year.

    Small businesses less likely to offer health promotion programs

    Employees at small businesses are less likely to have access to worksite wellness programs, according to a research review in the May Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. But smaller companies that can overcome the barriers and implement wellness programs can realize achieve meaningful improvements in employee health, report Kira McCoy, BA, of Hampshire College, Amherst, Mass., and colleagues.
