Is racism sufficient cause to fire someone from their job?
In the wake of the Aug. 12 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in which three were killed and dozens injured, that's the question buzzing in the brains of employers all over the country. A new report from the Society for Human Resource Management points out that it's a disturbing realization for an employer that an employee has taken part in a white supremacist rally — particularly in the case of deaths and injuries.

For decades, employee assistance programs have offered a low-barrier, confidential way for employees to seek help quickly — before a small problem becomes a larger and costlier one. Unfortunately, in the case of opioid abuse and pain-pill addiction, the situation often reaches a crisis in a matter of days or weeks, as opposed to the months or years it typically takes for problems like alcohol abuse to reach a flash point.

When a loss happens, you are never prepared for the feelings that come over you. When my son died in a car crash that a drunk driver caused, there was so much to process then and well after the event. You are used to having that person around and then suddenly they aren't there anymore. You won't get a chance to say everything you wanted or enjoy any more time together. You're left with a void. As such, grief can have a significant impact on the body and mind, adversely influencing your work performance and increasing the challenges you face just trying to handle daily tasks. As managers and colleagues, it is important that we understand how grief affects people so that it can be handled in a sensitive way while also encouraging the grieving person to refocus again on their life.

Americans are drinking more than they used to, a troubling trend with potentially dire implications for the country's future healthcare costs.
The number of adults who binge drink at least once a week could be as high as 30 million, greater than the population of every state save California, according to a study published recently in JAMA Psychiatry. A similar number reported alcohol abuse or dependency.
Between the genders, women showed the larger increase in alcohol abuse, according to the report.

Work is a naturally stressful environment but a recent study has suggested that the workplace may be damaging men's mental health significantly more than that of their female colleagues.
A new survey by U.K. mental health group Mind has found that men are more likely to suffer from mental health issues relating to work than their female counterparts.
According to the study, one in three men associate their mental health issues with the workplace, with only one in seven saying any issue they are suffering from is rooted in problems outside work.

In a new national survey, researchers from Michigan State University examined mental-health literacy across four major issues — including anxiety, depression, alcohol and prescription-drug abuse — and found that out of 4,600 respondents, a full 32 percent were unable to identify the signs of pill addiction. Men and urban dwellers were particularly bad at knowing when something was amiss.

Bosses want their workers to start taking mental-health days for the right reasons. Workers often say they're taking a mental-health day with a wink and a nudge, as it's commonly understood that they'll be catching up on housework or going to the beach. Meanwhile, many people who genuinely need time off to see a therapist or recover from an anxiety attack say they're less than forthcoming with their managers about why they need a break.

In the popular imagination, workplace injustice ends with triumph on the courtroom steps. Unfortunately, the reality is often less rosy. Even when lawyers are engaged, the vast majority of disputes settle before being heard by a judge. Here are three workplace issues that are rarely litigated.
