BPEA Conference Drafts
A major Princeton University study reports that about half of prime age men who are not in the labor force may have a serious health condition that is a barrier to work. Nearly half of prime age NLF men take pain medication on a daily basis, and in nearly two-thirds of these cases they take prescription pain medication. Labor force participation has fallen more in areas where relatively more opioid pain medication is prescribed, causing the problem of depressed labor force participation and the opioid crisis to become intertwined. Hurricanes don't strike every part of the country. But no corner of the United States is completely safe from natural disaster, including earthquakes, tornados, volcanic activity, or the kinds of wildfires currently burning in the West.
It's time to ask: Is your business prepared to handle a hurricane or other natural disaster? It's hard to get through an event like Harvey or Irma without a high level of disruption. But planning for that disruption and doing what you can to minimize its effects can make the difference between a business that will continue on after hurricane season is over and one that may have to shut its doors for good.

On Oct. 1, federal law takes effect requiring employers and federal agencies to screen for four more opioids — hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone and oxymorphone — that have increasingly been showing up in workers' drug tests. Dan Boissonneault CEAP, a member of EAPA's board of directors, says widened testing for those narcotics will likely prompt users to turn to corporate and labor-union EAPs for help.

In today’s era of workplace burnout, achieving a simpatico work-life relationship seems practically out of reach. Being tired, ambivalent, stressed, cynical and overextended has become a normal part of a working professional life. Opioid prescriptions have nearly quadrupled since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the drugs help people manage pain, they are also addictive. The rise in prescriptions means more addiction, and drug abuse in the workplace means headaches for employers. The cure for that headache, though, is not a Band-Aid approach. Working toward solving the opioid problem in the workplace will require careful consideration in resources and prevention methods from employers.
