But when it came time to create the faux marble neo-Egyptian doorway leading into the living room, a "major element," Skurman decided to fly in Willem Racké, a decorative painter based in San Francisco. Art for the Wall, This Time in Vinyl
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wrapped, a company that makes artistic gift wrap and accessories, has teamed with Blik, producers of decorative wall decals, on a new collection of vinyl wall coverings. Called Blik X Wrapped, the designs are based on intensely colored, high-resolution photos. How to Allocate Your Time and Your Effort
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Here's the secret to time management and success: Your colleagues who zoom ahead of you with seemingly less effort have learned to recognize and excel in what really counts — and to aim for less than perfect in everything else. To achieve more success, you should fully leverage your strengths instead of constantly trying to shore up your weaknesses. More

Firm Believer: At Home in Breda with the Cofounder of Moooi
ELLE Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Think of Casper Vissers as the hidden force behind Moooi. He launched the Dutch design firm in 2001 with superstar industrial designer Marcel Wanders, the team's art director; Vissers serves as Moooi's CEO. The company — whose name is inspired by mooi, the Dutch word for beautiful — brings a fresh, humorous approach to lighting, furniture, and accessories. A career in design was a left turn for Vissers, who once worked as a sales manager for a lumber company. More

Terrariums Make a Comeback for Plant Lovers and Decorators
Rapid City Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A little green can make a big difference. Kathryn Geary-Kuester of Rapid City, S.D., adds some green to her world through terrariums, or "naturescapes," in bell jars. She is one of a large number of people nationwide who are rediscovering the joy of terrariums. The last time the mini-gardens enjoyed such popularity was in the 1970s. Their appeal is growing, and more people are making them for fun and even for profit. Terrariums are made in almost any container imaginable — even tiny, jewelry-like wearable terrariums. More

A Rustic and Refined Aspen Getaway
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The clients who commissioned designer William Sofield to create their new home on Aspen's Red Mountain are a couple, he says, with somewhat divergent tastes. "The husband is a true modernist, so he would have lost his mind in a log cabin. And she's a bit more traditional, so the idea of traveling all the way from New York to Colorado just to be in a minimalist white box wasn't going to fly," Sofield explains. "The strength of this house lies in the tension between their aesthetics." More

Memphis Commercial Appeal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Home design in 2013 is all about keeping things light — light on the environment, light on clutter, easy on the eyes. "The people I work with still want neutral walls, with soft touches of color," said interior designer Lindsay Barton, owner of Memphis, Tenn.-based L. Barton Interiors. Layered neutrals are a big hit. Think cream on cream, white on white. More
