Really great design inspiration at IDS
Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This year's Interior Design Show, which is like a film festival for those who love design, is where manufactures launch some of their new products, designers where able to see prototypical designs and where just about everyone in the design world in Canada and some from the rest of the globe congregates for a few days. If you had the opportunity to attend, you would have been proud of the quality and talent and you would have found yourself leaving with inspiration and information. The list of internationally acknowledged trendsetting creators was impressive, and the exhibit floor was filled with great technology, amazing newcomers, innovators and artists. More

At home with Giorgio Armani in Switzerland
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Architecturally speaking, the Engadine Valley in southeast Switzerland pushes few envelopes. Best known for the posh resort of Saint Moritz, this dramatic 60-mile-long stretch between jagged mountains is dotted with traditional stone houses whose parchment-color exteriors have been embellished with folkloric sgraffito, decoration made by scratching the plaster walls with iron nails. Characteristic, too, are small windows whose size keeps the alpine chill at bay while their deeply angled recesses funnel precious light indoors. More

Isn't it Bucolic
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Authenticity might just have one last gasp in 2012 before marketers club it to death. But even if the back-to-basics appeal of eating slow food and buying hand-wrought items wears off, there'll always be the joys of "a simple country house." The best rustic retreats feel like they grew from the ground — perfectly charming, relaxing and complete. Creating that effect, however, can be an even bigger challenge than handling those lumps in the almost-retired mattresses and the drafts that bedevil vintage rooms. More

Concrete thinking

Christian Boros, the owner of a German advertising agency, and his wife, Karen Lohmann, an art historian, were looking for a singular space in Berlin — both for living and exhibiting their vast contemporary-art collection — when they discovered an old five-story bunker in the central neighborhood of Mitte. The bunker had been built in 1942 as an air-raid shelter for residents of the area. "It was what we wanted: something really interesting from a historical point of view," Lohmann recalls. More
