Elton John and David Furnish's Home in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Architectural Digest
Given musician Sir Elton John and film producer David Furnish's reputation as savvy collectors of contemporary art, one could be forgiven for assuming that the swing set on the front lawn of their new Los Angeles house is actually some installation by an up-and-coming artist — perhaps a discovery made during John's recent concert tour. But it's a mistake to assume anything about this pair. While the home may present certain earmarks of rock-icon fabulousness (a swank Beverly Hills,Calif., address, breathtaking hilltop views), in both scale and design this modernist dwelling was chosen with one overriding goal in mind: to create a comfortable West Coast base for the couple and their expanding family, which includes a two-year-old son, Zachary, and a newborn son, Elijah, who arrived just as this issue went to press.

The $100,000 Closet
The Wall Street Journal
When Rochelle Maize renovated her 6,110-square-foot Beverly Hills, Calif., home, it wasn't a new kitchen or home theater at the top of her list of must-haves — it was a closet. She hired a designer to create a 400-square-foot master closet with a flat-screen television, a refrigerator for Champagne, white cabinetry with silver-leaf etchings and a large crystal chandelier. Total cost: $100,000.

Restoration Drama
The New York Times
In the annals of domestic horror stories, Jay Fielden's is as gothic as they come. It begins with the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the attendant financial meltdown in the fall of 2008. He and his wife, Yvonne Orteig Fielden, now both 43, and their two young children had just moved into their new home, a sturdy example of Connecticut's storied collection of modernist glass houses, which they had bought for $900,000 in 2007 and spent eight months renovating.

Malibu, Calif., Town House: From Mold to Remodeled
Los Angeles Times
The job started with a water leak — and ended in the total remodel of the 1,800-square-foot Malibu town house. Jackie Gould, who had lived in the beachfront home since 1976, called Erla Dögg Ingjaldsdóttir and Tryggvi Thorsteinsson, the husband-and-wife principals of the Santa Monica architecture firm Minarc, and asked them to help with a little repair work related to the leak. "Mold-proof me," she remembered saying. But it wasn't so easy.
