A River Runs Through … the Home
The Wall Street Journal
Water features, once a second thought when it came to residential design, are now moving to the forefront of home construction. And the latest high-end water features go well beyond yesterday's backyard pool; today's homeowners are building lazy rivers, reef aquariums, man-made mountains with water slides and massive moats. Still, builders say some homeowners aren't prepared for the sticker shock when installing these features or the overhead of maintaining them. Costs for water features can run high; designers and architects who specialize in building them say the features can rival the price of a house, topping $1 million in some cases.

Stripes, Stripes, Stripes!
New York Interior Design Blog
One of the "go-to" patterns that interior designers use to add a linear quality to a space is a Stripe! They can give the space the illusion of height and volume and making a low ceiling feel better. When used as a horizontal stripe, they can make a narrow space feel a bit wider. Stripes are also used on window treatments and in upholstery.

One Size (Small) Fits All
The New York Times
The so-called micro-pad is now a buzz phrase and a cultural touchstone, thanks to New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. But when single-room living was being sketched out in the floor plans of Manhattan, N.Y.'s first apartment buildings, particularly during the boom years of the 1920s, it was called the studio apartment. Designed for the eager young women and men on a budget who were flocking to the city, the romantic label was intended to evoke the glamour and Bohemianism of the artist's preferred mode of living. Studio was a "magic word," as Anatole Broyard once wrote about his own dive apartment on Prince Street in the 1940s.

Supporting Rolls
The Wall Street Journal
If you're tired of slouchy boho chic and ready for something more buttoned up, you're not alone. Designers like Christiane Lemieux, founder of New York-based décor company DwellStudio, are embracing a more formal look, and the humble bolster plays a pivotal role. These cylindrical cushions, as precisely defined as topiary, add structure to a bed or sofa while still ensuring comfort. Flabby throw pillows can't compare.

Op Art for Every Room
The New York Times
Ordinary wallpaper companies mass-produce their goods and sell them in rolls, but Wall & Decò creates murals that are custom printed to fit each site, resulting in room-size works of art. The catalog of the Italian company is filled with ethereal butterflies, decorative alphabets, slashing graffiti and bold images of street grids. And last year, the company introduced designs for exterior walls that make it possible to turn your house into a giant piece of Op Art.

Sofas: How Low Can You Go?
Gardenista
Michelle Slatalla, editor of Gardenista, writes: "Is there anything scarier than a sofa? I've been reluctant to buy one since my last blunder, a Ralph Lauren leather sleigh so large that our feet dangled. The back and arms were high and swooping; it felt like being in a skateboard park. Children etched initials in the leather. This time I resolved to get an elegant, low-slung sofa for the living room. The day it arrived, though, I realized I had once again made a terrible, terrible mistake: 'That looks like dollhouse furniture," my husband said, wandering into the living room. "Is it for the dogs?' "
