How to Survive in a Competitive World
Entrepreneur
You would not believe how many "sure things" and "done deals" I've had fall apart at the last minute. I've been passed over for jobs and promotions I should have gotten so many times it isn't funny. And the way people keep dangling carrots in front of my eyes, you’d think I was a hungry rabbit.

11 Daring Interior-Design Moves
The Wall Street Journal
Decorators have rich inner lives. They're forever entertaining fantasies about rooms they worship and yearn to recreate, materials they dream of using and techniques they ache to try. Sometimes these ideas tack a little wide of convention, but inspired thinking usually does. We polled pros on the riskiest, and most rewarding, moves they've made on the job — plus a few they haven't taken yet but absolutely would for the right client who's willing to take a chance. (Maybe that's you?) Here's a sampling.
How to Curb the Stress Factor at Your Startup
Entrepreneur
If you're a business manager or executive, you've probably thought about how stress manifests itself at your workplace and hurts your business: absenteeism, tension at the conference table and poor morale. This is especially the case if your company is a startup. But there are other, more subtle ways that stress can sabotage your team’s performance.
The 10 Things You Must Have In Your Home By Age 30
ELLE Decor
"Art stays with you for a lifetime, and each piece marks a place and a memory," says Todd Nickey of Nickey Kehoe. "Start collecting when you're young — it doesn't have to cost a fortune, it just has to speak to you."
Prepping your design conversation
By Michael J. Berens
Clients today are more demanding than ever. They think they have all the answers because they have done some searching on the Internet and watched a bit of design TV. They comparison shop right before your eyes, using their tablets and smartphones. They want to nickel and dime every product and service. They don't value your design experience or expertise. Some designers dread calling on new clients because they feel they are walking into an ambush. No one should have to work that way. And you don't have to.
Discover What Your Clients Really Want
Design Management Company
Happy clients bring more business. A happy client is one who feels his or her needs and wishes have been met. But we all know that often what people say makes them happy is not really what makes them happy, or as happy as they thought they would be. To ensure your own business success, it’s your job to know what it is your clients really want.
Trend Alert: 10 Jagged Edges
Remodelista
The ultimate Wabi Sabi statement? Lately we're noticing imperfect edges, blurred boundaries, tiles that don't quite line up. Here are 10 examples.
The Wise & Houzz
Pro Remodeler
Three years ago, David Roberts, president of Roberts Design Build, had a client ask him to look at an Ideabook on Houzz.com. The client wanted to share pictures of a kitchen cabinet style she wanted Roberts to use for a design-build project. This was the first time Roberts had been asked to view a client's Ideabook, a concept radically different from how design ideas were previously exchanged between the remodeler and the client. "In decades past, our clients would buy magazines and tear out photos they liked to show me," Roberts says.
Lovingly Resurrecting a Historic Queen Anne
Houzz
Interior designer Carl Mattison and his husband and business partner Rob Smith have lived in the historic downtown Atlanta neighborhood of Grant Park for about 13 years. It's walking distance to the famed Atlanta Zoo, the city's oldest park and more than a dozen restaurants. They love the area and its charming early-1900s bungalows so much they’ve made it their personal mission to rehabilitate some of the old homes, one at a time, whenever they can, and find homeowners who will take care of them.
5 Ways To Hack Your Weekly Schedule To Get More Done
Fast Company
If your to-do list never seems to get done and you feel behind by Monday afternoon, it's probably time revamp your weekly schedule. Here's a weekly check-in plan that actually works.
5 Uncommon Ways to Win a Customer's Heart
Entrepreneur
Your customers are the lifeblood of your business. So whether you own an ecommerce business or a brick-and-mortar store, letting your customers know how much you value them is important. And once you start thinking about your business in terms of relationships rather than transactions, you’ll find that customer retention comes naturally.
Roll Out the Snow Carpet
The New York Times
"This is where we want to be" was the first thought that Clay Heighten and his wife, Debra Caudy, had when they stepped off the plane at the Jackson Hole Airport eight years ago. As Heighten said, "Those mountains really make an impact." Heighten, 57, a physician-turned-entrepreneur, and Dr. Caudy, 56, an oncologist, live in Dallas with the youngest of their four children (the other three are grown), and were in town visiting a business associate of Heighten's who had built a house with an enviable view of the mountains.
Top 5 Kitchen Trends of 2014
CBS MoneyWatch
Move over robot vacuums and single-cup coffee makers, vintage cookware and gadgets controlled by a smart phone are poised to be the next big trends in kitchens. This year, home chefs can expect to see a lot of products on the shelves that allow them to cook healthier and fresher, often without slaving over a hot stove.
