Create an Open-Air Dining Room
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A good garden is a many splendor thing: Even we beginner gardeners agree that a symphony of flowering plants, almost weedless beds and thriving, super-green lawns, shrubs and trees are well worth the hassle. But a beautifully laid-out and maintained outdoor space — no matter how artfully clipped and formal, or bountiful and romantic — is merely decorative if it can't be used by creatures higher on the evolutionary scale than groundhogs and Japanese beetles. 7 Steps Toward Client-Relationship Harmony
Bplans    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A strong business is built on relationships. Producing solid work is a given, but it is the people behind the work product, those that manage the process, and the expectations and outcomes that drive the success of a campaign. Keeping a client happy may seem more like the work of a psychologist sometimes, but there are a few sure-fire ways to manage the success of a campaign and thus the relationship. More

Access Lighting

Vapor, so named for its “out of thin air” three dimensional appearance, is created by the diagonal cut of the glass. Equipped with a floating canopy, you have the flexibility to position the three, four or five light series as desired, regardless of the location of your j-box. The low profile of this series ensures ADA compliance, and the halogen light source provides more than adequate light for a bathroom setting.

IDS Member Melanie Murphy Opens Business in Massachusetts
Reading-North Reading Patch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hidden behind the buildings on lower Haven Street in Reading, Mass., is a store that feels like several rooms of a home. Colorful pillows sit on chairs and display pieces and on an 84-inch white sofa, a sample of the store's customized furniture. A second front-of-a-house façade inside the store, with a real door and window, opens into a totally different but related part of the business: samples of swatches of fabric for upholstery and window coverings and the work table of the seamstress who custom-crafts them. Design Options Abound for Shared Bedrooms
St. Louis Post-Dispatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many families are obsessed with space. We love large walk-in closets, huge playrooms, enormous entertaining areas and over-sized garages. We also like lots of bedrooms. So many that each of our kids can have his or her own. However, it may become necessary to have two or more siblings share a room if you downsize to a smaller home or welcome a new addition. More

Old-school Chalkboards Making a Return in Modern Home Decor
Arizona Daily Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chalkboards may be old-school, but they're the newest accent in home decor. "Look what I made," said Kelly Sims of Liberty, Mo., holding up her smartphone during an unofficial show-and-tell during a chalkboard paint class at Be Here Now, a store in Independence, Mo. She flipped through pictures: a picnic basket with a chalkboard top for playfully listing its contents; an old mirror converted into a message board; the fronts of a few kitchen cabinets for meal planning. Sims finds pieces in thrift stores, garage sales and even the trash, then transforms them with chalkboard paint into gifts and home-entertaining accessories. More

Color Wheel Can Ensure Paint, Decor Go Together
LifeGoesStrong    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Do you remember your long ago school art classes, where your teacher likely explained the relationship of colors to one another? Or your science class where you studied the spectrum of light and had to memorize ROYGBIV? (That's red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.) Turns out all of that information is important when it comes to decorating a home and why many homeowners think about color wheel paint when selecting wall coverings and room decor. More

A Scholar and A Gentleman
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The grandest names in America — Astor, Paley, Rockefeller — brought Social Register swagger to the portfolio of interior designer Albert Hadley. But the Tennessee-born talent, the erudite yang to Sister Parish's freewheeling yin at Manhattan, N.Y.,'s tastemaking Parish-Hadley Associates, left behind more than breathtaking rooms when he died in March at age 91. Simply put, he added backbone to a world of chintz. More

Couple Turn Old Milwaukee Frat House Into Their House
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Belushi and his frat-house friends from the movie "Animal House" would have been quite happy to live in Todd Badovski and Allyson Nemec's Concordia neighborhood home in Milwaukee — before they bought it in 2004, that is. "This was the Marquette University dental fraternity," said Badovski, owner of Cream City Construction, a residential remodeling firm. The couple, whose firms specialize in old homes, also found problems with the electricals, plumbing, damaged plaster and radiators that weren't connected. "But through the mess we could see opportunity," Nemec said. "We knew the bones of the home were really good, and the character-defining areas were still here." More
