The Interior Design Society (IDS) announced Anna Mavrakis, past president of IDS, as the recipient of its Fellowship Award at the ceremony concluding IDS National Conference on Friday, April 1. Becoming an IDS Fellow is the highest honor that can be awarded to a member and is only bestowed every few years when there is a member worthy of such an honor. Achieving the distinction of IDS Fellowship recognizes individual interior designers for outstanding accomplishments in their profession and for providing a significant contribution to IDS. The award was presented to Mavrakis by IDS National President, Jan Cregier.
Casual Living magazine has issued its annual designer survey. They are asking designers about outdoor rooms and are giving away three $100 Visa gift cards as an incentive. The deadline for responses is Friday, June 10. Click here to take the survey.

CHAIR-ity Event June 9!

Please join us at our "CHAIR-ity" event benefiting The Center For Family Justice featuring custom designed chairs by local designers and artists. The chairs will be presented in a silent auction and all proceeds from chair sales will benefit FJC.
The Family Justice Center approach is based on the San Diego Family Justice Center model that opened in 2002. The model has been defined as a best practice in the field of domestic violence intervention and prevention services by the United States Department of Justice. The Center would like to create a community where there is zero tolerance of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The Family Justice Center can help make this vision a reality.
IDS Connecticut supports the Center For Family Justice and we are excited to present this CHAIR-ity event. Please join us for an evening event for this very worthy cause.

People being people, that rush of excitement clients feel when they see how your vision has transformed their home tends to fade over time as they become accustomed to their new surroundings. Rather than wait, my suggestion is to ask clients for a referral while they are still enthusiastic about you and your work. That way they are more likely to say "yes" and to give you a glowing recommendation. To increase your chances of success, make it as easy for them as possible to provide a referral.

Interior design projects that don’t go well, or don’t happen at all, tend to have one thing in common: a failure of vision. You may fail to envision what you want, and do nothing. Get this: Pinterest, the ever-expanding repository of all our dreams and aspirations in digital mood board form, analyzed the dominant color in billions of pins in its database and deemed grey the hottest color for 2016, as far as all things home are concerned. As MyDomaine reports, grey saw a 20 percent increase in interior pins over the last year and is now "the most common color in the home decor category."

Builders continue to get mixed signals as to whether conditions are improving. Data reports from the nonresidential sector show a month-over-month decline from March to April but a general positive trend for the year. On the residential side, sales were up in April but have remained flat or are down slightly compared to the same period last year. Industry experts nonetheless remain cautiously optimistic that demand will increase in the second half of the year.
