Supernatural Ceramics
The Wall Street Journal
At times, the results can border on the grotesque, not unlike nature itself. The ceramic vessels of Nikolai and Simon Haas, 29-year-old twin brothers from L.A., seem simultaneously human, fungal and oceanic; it wouldn't be surprising if they started gurgling. (To gather inspiration, the Haases use underwater cameras to film anemones and other sea creatures.) But that bizarre quality is fueling demand.

The Many Facets of Faceted Design
The Wall Street Journal
Simple forms like spheres weren't entirely absent during New York Design Week — the annual cluster of exhibitions for which furniture, lighting and product designers converge in a proselytizing fever. But the occasional orb lamp was easily outnumbered by more complex exercises in geometry. Designers from around the world debuted chairs, shelving, vases and even clothes hooks built out of gemlike facets. Other pieces that weren't physically faceted were ornamented with polyhedron motifs. It all raises the question: Why are so many designers championing the chiseled?

They are less interested in flaunting their wealth and more concerned about enhancing quality of life for themselves and their loved ones. How affluent consumers think about quality-of-life issues varies depending on their level of age, gender and life stage.

A Luxe Palladian-style Home For 2 Art Connoisseurs
Architectural Digest
When Becky Mayer made plans to construct a seasonal home in Jupiter, Florida, one of her top priorities was to have abundant space for the paintings, photographs, and sculptures that the London-based arts patron and her husband, an investor, have assembled over the years. "But we also wanted a place that felt comfortable for our children and grandchildren," she says. Though the couple have an eye for important works from the 1960s to the present — mostly by Europeans, with a few Americans in the mix — they didn't want to feel like they were inhabiting a museum, even if the objects on display might suggest otherwise.
