A Mod, Mod World

When Robert Couturier began designing the interior of an apartment in a midtown Manhattan, N.Y., skyscraper, his client expressed one primary desire. "She wanted something ultracontemporary, because she had done everything else," Couturier says. The Polish businessman's wife had previously overseen the design of a number of the family's other homes in Europe. "They have incredibly beautiful houses," says Couturier. "They have one in Warsaw, another by a lake in the Polish countryside, a place in Geneva, a place in Sardinia, and a boat. Each reflects a different side of her personality." More

Big Homes Are Back in Business
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
KB Home says the average square footage of houses currently under contract is 2,079, an increase of 13 percent from last year. And more KB buyers are picking models that exceed 3,500 square feet. That is a change from the past few years, when builders were downsizing houses to accommodate an era of frugality and austerity. As the economy slowly improves and some consumers' anxieties ease, buyers are upsizing again — though there is far less demand than before for huge houses loaded with upgrades. More

Vanity Fair    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The wife of India's richest man, Nita Ambani has set herself apart as a passionate philanthropist, leading the development of a model township, an elite school, and a Premier League cricket team. Still, Mumbai can't stop talking about the 27-story, 570-foot-tall, 400,000-square-foot mansion that her family moved into two months ago. More

Easy Ways to Add Flash Without Wasting Cash
Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"How can we get the most bang for our buck in design?" This question never gets old, nor will it. Winning a project proposal means being able to deliver more for less — ever more for less and less. Finding solutions to add impact without ballooning the budget requires designers to be willing to rethink materiality and, sometimes, to take a few liberties with reality. More

Saying 'Meh' to Media Rooms
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As recently as 15 years ago, consumers were showing off then-new big-screen televisions in then-new media rooms that cost thousands — or even hundreds of thousands — to equip. But now, media rooms elicit a big "meh," according to a survey by Better Homes and Gardens. More

Fitness Furniture: A Couch Made For Crunches (And Chilling Out)
Fast Company's Co.Design    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The home exercise industry is built on indulging people's laziest instincts — get a six-pack in just 2 seconds a day and never leave home — which is why it's pretty shocking that the Bowflex and Nordic Track makers of the world didn't think of Panorama first: It's a living room set that doubles as fitness gear.
