Laura and George W. Bush's Serene Texas Retreat
Architectural Digest
Central Texas, especially that sweet spot halfway between Dallas and Austin where small swaths of the legendary old prairies remain, is an earthly paradise. Blowsy live oaks spread their heavy limbs beneath cloud-spattered skies, while creeks and rivers — most prominently the meandering Brazos — ripple alongside gently rolling pastures gilded with waving grasses. These natural glories are precisely what led Laura and George W. Bush to choose the area for their Prairie Chapel Ranch, the retreat they completed in 2001, just after he became the 43rd president of the United States. Occupying some 1,600 acres near the flyspeck town of Crawford, about 25 miles west of Waco, Texas, the property is anchored by a strong but relatively modest home that quietly honors its location.

Restoring an 18th-Century Farmhouse as a Guesthouse
The Wall Street Journal
Robert Couturier and Jeffrey Morgan are both devoted to dogs, gardens, Bach's compositions for strings and 18th-century houses. In their first year of marriage, the couple is remarkably compatible, with one exception: When Couturier envisions his perfect 18th-century dwelling, he sees Versailles. When Morgan does the same, it's a New England farmhouse.

'Precrastinating' And Why It's Just As Bad As Procrastinating
Fast Company
A 2011 study published in the European Journal of Economics, Finance and Administrative Sciences showed procrastination was one of the leading factors affecting work-related stress. Procrastination has been linked to poor performance, and even poor health. It would seem likely then that the opposite of procrastination — completing tasks sooner than they need to be done — would improve productivity and relieve stress.

Does Self-Employment Really Rise in Recessions?
Small Business Trends
Some observers argue that self-employment is counter-cyclical. Focusing on people’s decisions to go into business for themselves, these researchers argue that some of the people who lose their jobs when the economy contracts enter into self-employment, rather than becoming unemployed or exiting the labor force. Government data analyzed by Robert Fairlie at the University of California at Santa Cruz on behalf of the Kauffman Foundation supports this argument, showing that the rate at which people transitioned into self-employment rose during the Great Recession.

Your Summertime Retreat Could Be A Lot Closer Than You Think
By Brie Ragland
Backyard oasis. These two words instantly take your mind to relaxation and beauty in the comfort of your own home — well, technically it would be outside your home, but you get the gist. These days, more people are deciding to spend their saved-up vacation money and time in an outdoor living and/or entertainment space in their own backyard. With words like "staycation" created for those who spend their time off at home rather than traveling, the idea of having a place to retreat to is starting to sound much more appealing.
