Trend Watch: Rustic Utilitarian
DESIGN SPONGE
Blame it on the last decade's rocky economy or the waste-not-want-not mentality of the environmentalist movement, but we've witnessed a surge in people's desire for pared-down, beautiful designs that are unfussy and functional. These "rustic utilitarian" interiors feature items handpicked with longevity in mind — both in terms of construction and style.

Serendipity and Tradition Meet in Wallpaper Design
The New York Times
Alpha Workshops trains New Yorkers with HIV for jobs in artistic fields. A new wallpaper design, called Astral, shows just how spontaneous Alpha's students can be. Artisans at the workshop fold 15-foot-long sheets of paper, then unfold them, spread them out, and apply paint with a sponge. The paint is caught in the peaks and valleys, and no two sheets are exactly alike.

There was far too much lacquer and Art Deco for her traditional Southern taste. And yet she tingled at the thought of waking up every day in such a whimsically conjured space.

It's prohibitively expensive. And it can have a fussy, overwrought look that can easily clog up a modern, clean-lined aesthetic. Still, over the past decade, an increasing number of designers and artists have found ways to make marquetry look fresh, relevant and fully covetable.
