What Successful People Do With The First Hour Of Their Work Day
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How much does the first hour of every day matter? As it turns out, a lot. It can be the hour you see everything clearly, get one real thing done, and focus on the human side of work rather than your task list. More

An Afternoon with Patty Madden
Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As you approach Patty Madden's home via its winding driveway, the scene is something out of a Disney movie. Bushy white-tailed deer frolic on her yard and in the woods that line the property. Amazing views of the Hudson River sparkle from her open porch, where her husband and business partner, Gary Miller, has been enjoying them all morning. As he walks towards us, a huge Cuban cigar in hand, Madden opens their bright red barn door with a welcoming smile on her face. More

7 Home Color Tips From A 'Color Whisperer'
Care2 Healthy Living    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jeanette Chasworth is a designer who specializes in color and the author of the newly published book, "What's Color Got To Do With it?" She often is called a "color whisperer." She can go into a room and communicate with it, intuiting the colors that are needed based on the client's desires and the messages she picks up from all of the objects in the room. The most asked question is how a client can change their space for the least amount of money. The answer always is color, which often is something that can leave people feeling stuck when working on their home. More

Michael S. Smith's Manhattan, NY, Penthouse
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some people employ a broker to find their dream apartment, others search the Internet. But Los Angeles–based designer Michael S. Smith discovered his Manhattan pied-à-terre — a duplex penthouse off Madison Avenue — by looking out a window. He was working nearby and noticed a terrace of elegant proportions that skirted the top floors of a prewar building. "It had such a beautiful perspective," he says of the apartment. "City views that unfold gently, on four sides, with townhouse rooftops in the foreground and glass towers in the distance." More

Donald Kaufman On Choosing Colors
Elle Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

A Colorful Upper West Side Apartment by Jamie Drake
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jamie Drake is all about color. The interior designer's work has many facets, but curious minds mostly want to grill him about his frisky palettes. What's the secret behind pairing lavender and orange so artfully? How can a prissy pink look so masculine? The Manhattan, N.Y.-based tastemaker is synonymous with punchy, saturated hues: audacious yellows, luminous blues, reds so fiery they might burst into flame. Even when renovating a historic property, such as Gracie Mansion, the New York City mayoral residence, Drake doesn't shy away from caffeinated shades. "I love all my colors!" he says with evangelical exuberance. "The trick is using them for maximum impact." More

Design Attitudes Formed Online, Via Brands
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Information we get from electronic and print media influences our sense of style; no surprise there. A soon-to-be-published article in the Journal of Consumer Research details how: "Design blogs such as Apartment Therapy or lifestyle brands such as Martha Stewart help consumers exercise taste in their everyday life as they learn how to generate meaning through objects." 4 Traits of Incredibly Effective Delegators
Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it came to her own company, Vanessa Merit Nornberg knew that she wanted her company to be a place that valued motivation and maverick thinking over micromanagement. The only way to make that happen was to be willing to delegate, and as a business owner, giving up control sometimes was scary. To beat back fear in favor of freedom, here's how to comfortably delegate. More

Tendence 2012: Textiles out of Africa
Dwell    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While traditional, the colors and geometric patterns would not look out of place in a modern home. A neighboring series of booths featuring designs from Tunisia—a country that is now finding its footing after overthrowing its former dictator—also featured some stunning pieces, which made for a rich haptic and visual experience. The grouping was meant more to boost exports and there isn't typically a click-to-buy online shop for the products (but many designers said that they take orders via email and phone). In the following slideshow, spy the bright colors, thick weaves, and unexpected materials on view at the fair. More
