Secret Sources of Cash For Your Business
American Express OPEN Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Important election years are notoriously difficult times for financial institutions and investors to make long-term decisions. There simply is too much uncertainty associated with a potential change in the administration or a shift in party control of Congress. Investors like certainty. But there is one thing that investors like more than certainty — returns. Investors are sitting on one of the largest stockpiles of cash in history and they are waiting to deploy that cash if the right investments are presented to them. For some investors, your company may be the perfect opportunity. More

Decorating Kid Rooms: No Pink or Blue Paint?
Try Green, Gray and Yellow

The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Marika Meyer, a designer who lives and works in Bethesda, Md., is in baby overload. In addition to moving her 2-year-old son, Grayson, into his "big boy room" before Baby No. 2 arrives in December, she has seven clients who are expecting. But get this: None of her clients has chosen to learn the gender of the baby before birth. For Meyer, who is in charge of decorating each nursery, this means no princess murals or race car beds. These days, she said, neutrals are the new pink and blue. More

4 Socialcam Tricks for Your Small Business
American Express OPEN Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Socialcam is an app that lets you instantly share video content. Touted as the "Instagram for video" it has seen great traction, logging 36 million members as of May 2012. A large segment of that user population, though, is comprised of brands using video content as a marketing tool. Top brands range from the New York Jets to General Electric. Big companies find success on Socialcam by letting fans and the general public behind the scenes of the well-known brand and providing customers the chance to interact with makers of the product. Beige Can Be an Oddly High-Maintenance Friend
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beige works best when it is part of a greater plan. It is fabulous when layered with similar shades and white, and natural materials such as wood, parchment, leather and metal. The room at right illustrates this idea beautifully. Rather than being used as an escape route, a neutral palette has been carefully considered to create a modern, tranquil room. With an absence of grabby color, several different patterned rugs could be layered on the floor without the risk of it looking chaotic. More

11 Shutters to Enhance Every Window
Houzz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The architectural detailing of traditional shutters can enhance the interior and exterior of a house. Often custom made, shutters offer full privacy with the ability to manipulate the individual louvers into the up or down position. Shutters can cover any window or door, let in as much or as little light as needed and serve as a spectacular companion to any fabric top treatment. Full of character, shutters are durable investments that can enhance a home's resale value. More

Supersizing the Empty Nest
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There is a subset of parents who view the departure of their children to college as an occasion to start thinking bigger and better. They want to upsize, or at the very least, to upgrade. For some, paying off that last tuition bill also gives them the wherewithal to buy the sort of space they have always wanted. They leap at the chance to trade in the family apartment for one better suited to hosting dinner parties and out-of-town guests. More

Things To Do In The Last Few Minutes Of Your Workday
CBS MoneyWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Depending on your job, the last few minutes of each day might drag on, or be filled with a flurry of things you need to get done in order to get out the door at a decent hour. You might already be prepping your next day's to-do list, but experts say there are even better ways to guarantee you'll be as productive as possible on your next workday. Here are three to try. Vacation Home Interiors Take Cue From Outdoors
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution via Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When you're paying for the view, a vacation home doesn't need to have fussy décor or over-the-top interiors that distract from the lake setting. "That's the reason why they're buying the house," said Alicia Mooney-Macchia, owner of Alicia Mooney Interiors, an interior designer at Lake Oconee, Ga., and throughout metro Atlanta. "What you want to do is walk in the house and look straight back at the view." Heavy fabrics and details such as fringe on furniture are out, replaced with clean lines, linen fabrics and neutral colors, she said. More

What Are You Really Earning Per Hour?
Design Biz Blueprint    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We all have had a demanding client who takes too much of our time demanding more and more choices because they are having a hard time making a decision. But what about when we are the time-wasters? What about when our own indecision is causing us to spend far more hours than necessary on a design task? More

After Stainless, Now What?
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Major manufacturers are placing bets on different potential successors to the shiny, upscale appliance finish, which surprised everyone with its resilience. The new colors and materials try to blend in with their surroundings, rather than stand out like a trophy of technology the way shiny stainless steel tends to do. More

Benjamin Moore Refreshes Chalkboard Paint
Home Channel News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Montvale, N.J.-based Benjamin Moore introduced a new edition of its Chalkboard Paint, now tintable in any color. The Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint (308) is a latex topcoat that turns virtually any interior surface into a chalkboard, the company said. The brand's Chalkboard Paint has been in the line for years, but the color choices have been expanded to more than 3,300 hues. More

Detect Lying Clients By Reading Their Facial Cues
American Express OPEN Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over time I have learned that the truth is not what people say, writes Mike Michalowicz, author of "The Pumpkin Plan" and "The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur". It is what they say AND what they do while they say it that speaks the truth. The truth is revealed through microexpressions, subtle changes in the face that happens for only a fraction of a second. A microexpression is just like any other facial expression (e.g. a wide-open, slacked jaw expressing utter surprise) it is just expressed momentarily, before the person "recovers" to a lying expression that matches their lying words.
