IDS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New IDS Professional Member, Patti Allen, was recently published in the May/June edition of Texas Home and Living. The article, entitled "Cottage of Memories," describes how this project began as a recently widowed homeowner updated and redefined her home in an effort to move on with her life after her husband's death. With the exception of a coat of paint here and there, the small cottage had not been renovated in any way since it was built in the 1970's. The cottage up to date with a "Country French Cottage" look that fit her aesthetic taste and allowed Patti to incorporate many of her heirlooms as well as bringing in some new pieces. What's The Matter With This Picture?
Small Business Trends    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Image matters. The look and feel of your website says something about you. And so do your headshots and company logo — or the lack thereof. The impact of image is going away any time soon. Sure you can get around it, but you have to work harder to convince people that you actually know what you’re talking about. When you look the part, however, the battle is a little easier. So, make your company image work for and not against you. More

Sex, Architecture and Design
Interior Design's Design Wire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sex, architecture, and design have a lot to do with each other. And nowhere have they been such good bedfellows as on the pages of Playboy magazine. Beatriz Colomina, a professor at the Princeton University School of Architecture and founder of their Media and Modernity program, has been studying the connection for the past three years. Now, Colomina has worked closely with curators at the NAiM/Bureau-Europa in Maastricht, The Netherlands, to organize the exhibition "Playboy Architecture, 1953-1979″ on view from Sept/ 29 through Feb. 10. Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An inner jolt that Carla Fendi of fashion’s most famous sister act calls la spinta (“the thrust” in Italian) has molded the executive’s life and directed the look of her homes for the past five decades. "As soon as something extraordinary — be it a painting, a work of ceramic, or glass — catches my eye," she says, "there is no escape: The object must be mine." That impulse has led her to assemble a provocative and deeply sophisticated collection of 20th-century European art and design. More

Tribal Patterns
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Shana Campanaro, the artist and designer who founded the Brooklyn wallpaper and fabric company Eskayel, has discovered that studying the traditions of other cultures — particularly their tribal patterns — often triggers ideas for new designs. "I find a lot of inspiration in tribal-type patterns," said Campanaro, 35, who collects blankets, tapestries and other woven goods on her travels to countries like Mexico and Indonesia and frequently uses them to decorate her home. Los Angeles Cottage Remade as a Wonderland of Color
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With lavender in glorious bloom, the Franklin Hills house of Jamie Schwentker, an architect who specializes in landscapes (Schwentker Watts Design), and Franco Giacomo Carbone, a film production designer, features mango-hued shingles with moss- and celery-colored accents. "I call it Late Wicked Witch," Schwentker said, "which is partly a nod to the whole movie thing and partly because it looks like a fairy-tale house. Like 'Alice in Wonderland.'" More

New Classics: Tom Dixon's Beat Pendant Lights
houzz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
India influenced Tom Dixon's series of brass Beat Pendant Lights in more ways than one. Indian cooking pots and water vessels inspired their striking forms, while master craftsmen spin the forms and hand beat the brass in Moradabad, Northern India. In a world where so many things are mass produced, the creation of these lights keeps these rare skills employed and alive. The pendants come in several shapes with very straightforward names, like Fat, Stout, Wide and Tall — refreshing, eh? More

Another Angle on Family Life
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lisa Koshkarian and Tom Di Francesco knew they had to renovate their house when they could no longer keep adult hours there. The couple had bought a 1930s Mediterranean-style home in the Potrero Hill neighborhood here for $1 million in 2002, and had already spent $500,000 adding on a third-story master suite to take advantage of the area’s famously close-up, dead-on views of downtown.
