Decor On The Wild Side

People have used animal imagery in their decorating since they were painting ancient beasts on cave walls. There's nothing new about the look, Elle Decor interiors editor Robert Rufino said, but there is a modern approach trotting through homes. The current way to use animal prints, figurines, imagery, hides and bones in home decor is full of whimsy, he said. It takes the old-world tradition of stately trophies to a very fun place.

Yearning for a place to unplug, meditate and pray, some people are transforming parts of their homes into houses of worship. These latest spiritual spaces are no longer relegated to a single altar in the corner of the room. Homeowners are creating meditation gardens, yoga and tai chi studios and private chapels. Rather than tacking these spaces on as afterthoughts, architects and builders are incorporating them into home plans from the start.

Collectors of Louis XIV and XV furniture, Candice and Steven Stark have a reverence for history. It's part of what attracted them to the Manhattan pied-à-terre they bought several years ago in a landmark 1920s building on Park Avenue.
