Oxblood, the New 'It' Color
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When legendary Vogue fashion editor Diana Vreeland had her living room decorated in 1955, she told designer Billy Baldwin that she wanted it to look like "a garden in hell." Vreeland, who died in 1989 and is the subject of a new documentary, "The Eye Has to Travel," was infatuated with the color red in all its intensities and hues. She believed that tiring of it would be like tiring of someone you love. The room, which was drenched in red, from the pillow cases to the picture frames, was almost as famous as she was. But we can't all be Diana Vreelands. In fact, many people find too much red to be severe and overwhelming. Perhaps that's why this season, the color on everyone's minds is darker, and a bit muted. It's red's buttoned-up cousin, oxblood. More

Pale Antiques Are Inspired By Swedish Gustavian Furniture
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Light and airy. Open and bright. Those are words we see constantly in decorating magazines and hear on those “"Hunters" shows on cable TV. The idea of blowing fresh air through traditional rooms has appeal for many, and in the past few decades, it has given rise to a succession of looks, most of them dialing back the color in our living rooms: tan sisal carpeting, faded tea-stained floral linen, the grayish Belgian beiges of Restoration Hardware's new look, maybe shabby-chic or cottage-style off-white slipcovers. Antiques? Sure. Mahogany or golden oak? Not so much. More

Colors That Shout
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For as long as Jamie Drake can remember, he has loved color. As a child, he experimented with various color combinations by making silk-screens, paintings and tissue-paper collages. … Today, as an interior designer with high-profile clients like Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, he is known for his audacious use of color. A Jamie Drake interior might have bright turquoise draperies, walls painted a sunny yellow or upholstery in pink and purple — or maybe all of the above. More

Homedit    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the days get shorter and the weather begins to cool off, we often find ourselves thinking about the colder days ahead and ways to stay warm. Nothing quite says warm and cozy like gathering around a wood-burning fireplace with a mug of hot cocoa. While the flickering light from the fire and deep, radiating warmth it creates send a relaxing ambiance throughout a space, fireplaces can make evoke a sense of ease even when not in use, creating a sense of home. And with many great fireplace designs, they often become a great focal point in a space. More

How Your Business Plan Might Be Holding You Back
Entrepreneur    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 1995, Jeff Hyman spent six to eight months developing a business plan for his Internet recruiting website, Career Central. By the time he was done, the document was more than 150 pages. His Silicon Valley colleagues praised its thoroughness. The plan was successful and landed him the $500,000 he had hoped to raise for the startup. But in retrospect, he wonders if his time could have been better spent. More
