US Interior Designs Urged to Go Beyond
Simple Aesthetics

DesignBuild Source    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over the past 20 years, the interior design sector has seen a dramatic transformation. Gone are the days of the flowery "decorator" title that has traditionally downplayed the efforts of interior designers, with a modern industry embracing the important role these industry professionals play in creating better, more liveable spaces. The loss of "decorator" title is symbolic of a shift in attitude across the design sector, with interior designers now focusing more on the psychological effects of design rather than focusing solely on the aesthetic. "My vision for Paramount Bay is one that integrates the natural beauty and energy of Miami into a look that is as functional as it is inspirational," he says. Click through our slideshow to see how he does just that, through bold wallpapers, dazzling chandeliers and luscious materials. More

The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Taking "what if" precautions may not seem urgent or even necessary if you're an entrepreneur just starting out. But it can be wise to set aside some funds and plan ahead in other ways in case a calamity strikes. Just one tragic event could set a new venture back several months or even destroy it for good. Roughly 25 percent of small businesses fail to reopen after a major disaster, according to the Institute for Business & Home Safety. More

Thoughtfully Designed, Hardworking Mudrooms Make Life Easier and More Organized
Minneapolis Star Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The once-lowly mudroom has earned a place among the big three of remodeling projects. A space to ease the transition from outside to inside, to organize boots, mittens and scarves, and to keep grunge at bay is the most requested home improvement, after kitchens and bathrooms, say Twin Cities designers and contractors. "Our clients tell us they love their home and neighborhood but they can't stand the mess of coats and backpacks and want help," said Ron Sonnek of Sicora Home Design in St. Louis Park. More

Caudell had occupied for a few years. More

The same could be said for her sunny, art-filled Venice home, where gold accents blend with sparkling glass, and vintage barrel chairs share the living room floor with new Ikea ottomans and a cool lamp bought off the flash sales site Gilt. In the arc of an architecture or interior design student's education, she may encounter the image of Abbé Laugier's "primitive hut" a dozen times. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but if you've ever sat in a darkened lecture hall and wondered, "Is that all there is?" then Shashi Caan's "Rethinking Design Interiors: Human Beings in the Built Environment" is for you.
