Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's a rush that comes from buying a new home that's not unlike first love: the thrill of possibility, the excitement of finding everything you always wanted wrapped up in one perfect package. There's also the moment that sometimes follows, when you realize your new love is not everything you had once hoped. For some new homeowners, that difficult moment comes when the suitcases are unpacked and furniture unloaded. The realization hits: This home looks nothing like the gorgeous model we fell in love with. Just as couples counseling can provide hope for love gone wrong, model home decorators provide hope for homes gone wrong. More

Designing a New Role
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Product design can be a thankless job. Many designers don't get to claim authorship of their work, and much of what they make, from sleds to spatulas, is assumed to be conceived on the factory floor without a jot of human intervention. So it may encourage designers to know that Brad Pitt not only respects what they do but takes pains to be one of them. More

 UPCOMING WEBINARS
Online On-Demand Webinars are Here!!

IDS is proud to announce the availability of pre-recorded webinars at your convenience through our new online learning management system (LMS). We currently have seven CEU certified webinars available through our homepage (www.interiordesignsociety.org) link labeled "LMS". There are instructions on how to start the webinar, obtain handouts and take a quiz to show completion once you click on this link. We will have non-CEU certified webinars available after the first of the year. As live webinars are conducted through IDS, they will become available through the LMS if individuals are unable to join the live session. We also hope to premier our conference speakers through this venue in order for participants to gain wider exposure to the speaker's expertise. IDS will automatically update your CEU record when you participate in the online webinars through our LMS thus there is no need for additional CEU filing.

Anything but Boring
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From her office in West Hollywood, Kely Wearstler described how she approaches a new project. First, she considers the bones of the house, and how they can be steppingstones to a bigger idea: a double-height ceiling might turn into a two-story library, or an unused guest bedroom might become a dressing room. How to find out who your influential followers are
TIME    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of the great things about social media is it makes it easier to gauge consumer sentiment and find opportunities. It takes some work, but you can determine who among your Twitter and Facebook followers are most likely to influence opinion about your company and products – and then you can target them with free offers, special insider status and other forms of flattery (hey, everyone wants to feel special). Rooms with a View: Tiny Spaces Designed to be Big on Style
Stylebeat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When 12 interior designers create vignettes in spaces the size of a parking spot, things get interesting. This year's Rooms With a View: Design on a Shoestring, held in Southport, Conn., channeled small-space talents into a lesson in layout, spatial use and ingenuity. More

For Entrepreneurs, 3 Ways to Control Your Destiny, Rekindle Joy
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Entrepreneurs and innovators are supposed to be happily self-directed. Instead, the same sad story is popping up in many parts of the world. People who left corporate jobs for the joy of entrepreneurship are working harder and feeling less joy. More

Making Space for Parents
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Multigenerational living is bringing families closer, especially as parents move in with their adult children. Atlanta-area builders are adapting and updating homes to add space, privacy and aging-in-place features, and interior designers say they are being asked to view potential properties with clients who need an expert's advice on aging in place. An Eye For Elegance
ELLE Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
All love stories unfold according to the same familiar rules. So do I-love-New-York stories. In the classic tale, you have a mad-hot affair with Manhattan in your 20s—wild nights, poetic mornings, fabulous people, brilliant cultural events. Then you flee to the suburbs and buy a house with a yard, having decided that the city is not a marriage-and-family type of town. But you never forget it. When William Sofield met the couple whose apartment he would ultimately spend the next two years designing, they were on the cusp of reuniting with the city they’d left behind. More

Blue and White a Winning Design Combo
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Color trends come and go, but blue-and-white remains a timeless design combination. For centuries the soul-soothing, easy-on-the-eyes partnership we find in nature has inspired people to create porcelain, paint, fabric, wallpaper and rugs that bring blue-and-white indoors. Ancient blue-and-white Chinese porcelains, long the envy of collectors, are still copied today. More

Frame of 18th-century Connecticut House Becomes An Antique Yet Modern Home for Potomac, Wash., Family
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On a meandering woodsy lane in Potomac, Wash., past a 1950s ranch and a couple of McMansions, sits a barn-red house with a cedar shake roof that looks as if it belongs to an 18th-century New England village. It does. The main section of the shingled home is actually the frame of a 1790 Colonial Connecticut farmhouse. An adjoining new wing that echoes the Colonial style seamlessly adds more living space, storage and a garage. More

If You Do Only One Thing On Social Media, Do This
Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Aaron Aders, co-founder of Slingshot SEO, explains the first step you need to take on social media before anything else: identify trending topics on social media platforms so that you can learn the language of that social media community to help find the target market that you want to reach. That will help you dig into the conversations. More
