Last of FAA paper certificates to expire soon

Pilots have been required to carry plastic certificates since 2010, but the deadline for replacing other paper FAA certificates, such as mechanic, repairman, flight engineer or ground instructor, is coming up March 31. You still have time to meet the deadline, as long as you apply online, which takes about seven to 10 days for processing. Mail requests will take four to six weeks to fulfill. Each certificate replacement costs just $2. More

A California pilot is hoping there will eventually be a series of "Sky Trails" over areas of national importance that pilots can use to view them from the best vantage point. Larry Dighera recently finished putting together an interpretive website that pilots can use as a guide for touring the vast Second World War Desert Training Center devised by Gen. George Patton to get recruits ready for the land war in Europe and Africa. More

Diesel on track to replace turboshafts on light helicopter

The diesel engine demonstrator, which may replace turboshafts in light helicopters, is on track for flight tests on a Eurocopter EC120 in the second half of next year. It will feature a power-to-weight ratio between those of a general aviation diesel and a turboshaft. More

Bell Helicopter introduced the Bell 412EPI, an upgrade incorporating the Bell BasiX Pro integrated glass flight deck and the Bell 412EP platform. The new Bell 412EPI is powered by Pratt & Whitney's PT6T-9 Twin Pac engines and the BLR Strake and FastFin System, designed to improve performance by as much as 1,410 pounds of payload capacity. Solar-powered plane to make cross-US flight

The Solar Impulse, a plane that can fly on solar power, day or night, will make its way across the United States this summer — the first time the plane has attempted a cross-continental flight. Although the plane could make the whole trip from California to New York in one go, the pilot cannot. The plane travels at 40 to 50 miles per hour, so a cross-country flight would take days. The trip will have to be broken up into five legs. More

Airport moves forward on crosswind runway

Moving forward with a new crosswind runway project was seen as a "no brainer" for members of the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport Board. The need for better wind coverage for smaller aircraft coupled with a $10 million grant opportunity from the Florida Department of Transportation has prompted ECP officials to make the project a priority on the airport's master plan.
