After nearly 118 grueling, consecutive hours over the Pacific Ocean, the sun-powered Solar Impulse 2 is back on land — and freshly stamped into aviation record books.
Pilot Andre Borschberg landed the plane on the Hawaiian island of Oahu five days after he took off from Japan — ending the longest and most dangerous leg in his team's attempt to fly around the world without a drop of fuel.
The leg — the eighth of a planned 13 — set a record for the world's longest nonstop solo flight in terms of time.

This video definitely fits into the "don't try this at home" category, unless, of course, you are a highly experienced bush pilot. The pilot managed to land and take off from a postage stamp gravel island in the middle of a river in Alaska, using water assisted landing technique.
The airplane touched down in the water a few feet before the island with what appear to be 29-inch tundra tires and came to a stop right in the middle of the small gravel bar.

Aircraft financing typically draws comparison to voodoo magic at a committee level — some group of bankers in the back of an office sitting around a table diving through the credit report and financials amidst discussions about their golf game. This couldn't be further from the truth — an aircraft loan is typically a hybrid of the underwriting used for an auto loan and a home loan. Aircraft loan underwriting has the speed more in line with an auto loan (typically 2-3 business days), but requires income verification such as with a home mortgage (gone are the days of the no-doc home mortgages!).

Last January, one of the National Air and Space Museum's most famous treasures, which had been suspended from the ceiling for 22 years, was lowered to the Museum floor. Its temporary location "gives our visitors a wonderful opportunity to see this remarkable aircraft up close in a way that normally they will not have a chance to," says curator Bob van der Linden.
