The Vintage Air Rally's next event will run for six weeks from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Lakeland, Florida. Setting off from the southern tip of Argentina on March 1, 2018, the group expects to fly 9,000 miles, passing through 19 countries, and arrive in Florida just in time for Sun N' Fun. For fifteen teams with the fortitude and access to a pre-WWII era airplane, the costs of participating in Ushuaia2USA (U2U) are fully covered by the sponsors.

Chase Walker's eyes will be glued to the sky as more than two dozen small planes descend Saturday on Old Orchard Beach, landing along the same sandy stretch where Charles Lindbergh once famously touched down in his plane.
"For the first plane, I'll be biting my nails," Walker said. "When it lands, I'll feel better."
It will be the first time in decades that Old Orchard Beach has been used as a landing strip for small planes.

Cara Mund made history, September 11, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where she was the first woman representing North Dakota to ever be crowned Miss America. But she wasn't necessarily the biggest star of this year's scholarship pageant. Instead, a 22-year-old woman hailing from a small town 1,700 miles away from Mund's hometown dominated the news cycle in the week leading up to the event, simply for the unique way she arrived in New Jersey.

It's pretty obvious that I'm a big fan of today's mobile technology. With a personal inventory of two iPhones (one for work, one for personal use) and two iPads (Mini 3 — might be Mini 4 by the time you read this article — and Air 2) plus WiFi subscriptions in three locations (one of those being an unlimited airline WiFi plan), at least one connected device is always close at hand.

Stratolaunch, the massive airplane that is being built by Scaled Composites to deliver satellites to low Earth orbit, successfully ran all six of its Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines for the first time this week, the company has announced. The PW4056 engines, which previously powered a Boeing 747, support a payload capacity of more than 150,000 pounds and an operational range of about 2,000 nautical miles. At 385 feet from wingtip to wingtip, Stratolaunch is the largest airplane, by wingspan, ever built. It's also the first aircraft to fly with six 747 engines.

When Frank Sinatra decided to drop a cool half-million on an airplane to shuttle his Rat Pack pals between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, he chose a Lear Jet. For Bill Lear's company, 1965 was a very good year.
Lear was 61 when he decided to get into the aircraft production business. Although he'd never designed an airplane, the self-trained engineer was known for his inventions, including the first jet autopilot, for which he'd received the 1949 Collier Trophy.

A two-part Boston Globe Spotlight investigation into the tracking of aircraft registrants and pilots with criminal ties found an overwhelming lack of scrutiny on the part of the Federal Aviation Administration. The investigation puts the FAA in the crosshairs for being unable to assist law enforcement with connecting U.S.-registered aircraft to the persons who actually own them — potentially an important piece of evidence in terrorism, drug trafficking and international corruption investigations.

When we approached the first mail stop, Ray Arnold rolled his Cessna 206 up on its left wing and spiraled down inside the narrow canyon that funnels Big Creek past Taylor Ranch. Bare ground the color of a cougar's hide filled the front window. The airspeed was slow, the bank was steep, and my senses were on high alert: One bad turn and we could hit the mountain, or fall into the creek. But Arnold's hand was steady and he rolled out just above the rushing water.

The danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in aviation was the subject of two safety alerts released by the NTSB, one for pilots and one for mechanics. The risk of CO poisoning is "generally overlooked and underestimated" by both pilots and mechanics, the safety board said. A defect or leak in the exhaust pipes or muffler can introduce CO into the cockpit, and exposure to the gas can lead to oxygen starvation and the onset of symptoms (headache, drowsiness, nausea or shortness of breath). Fatal accidents have resulted when the pilot is incapacitated by the exposure.
