ISEE strategic plan moves forward

The ISEE Board of Directors had their midyear board meeting in Washington DC on July 23-24 where the focus was on ISEE's strategic plan. On Saturday morning, the group went through an intensive planning process to review the member feedback received in a recent membership survey and apply that to a new ISEE strategic plan. With the development of this framework, the committee and staff will start to work out measurable actions to meet the goals and objectives that were identified. The goal is to have a new plan in place for the 2011 Annual Meeting to be held at the Towne and Country Resort in San Diego, February 6-9. More

Explosives store 'to help economy'

NFL running back joins forces with MSHA to deliver mine safety message

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration announced that Kansas City Chiefs' running back Thomas Jones has become a spokesman for the agency's annual "Stay Out-Stay Alive" public safety campaign, launched in 1999 to warn outdoor enthusiasts, especially children, about the dangers of playing on mine property. Each year, dozens of people are injured or killed in recreational accidents at active and abandoned mine sites.  More

Bomb squad destroys dynamite stash

The Farmington Bomb Squad destroyed 25 sticks of dynamite in La Plata County, Colo. An explosion occurred about 3 p.m. somewhere along Florida Road (County Road 240) northeast of Durango, said Stephen Smith, lead bomb technician for the Farmington Police Department.  More

Ban on quarrying is ineffective

Quarrying of hills within BMC limits is banned. But Debi Goenka, convenor, Conservation Action Trust, said, "In the name of building houses, the state allows hills to be cut. The argument is that Malabar, Antop and Worli hills were allowed to be cut to construct buildings 100 years ago." Quarrying is not allowed in residential and no-development zones.  More

Former Turnpike bridge stands strong against explosives

Maybe it was built better than they thought. A portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's old Allegheny River Bridge initially failed to drop after being imploded with explosives. Crews detonated the charges at 10 a.m. in anticipation of having two remaining sections of the bridge truss fall -- one on the Harmar side of the river and the other on the Plum side.   More

Now, snake 'robots' that may help detect and disable explosives

Engineers have developed snake-like autonomous robots that can slither into dangerous situations to detect and disable explosives. U.S. Army Research Laboratory engineers have developed these robots to aid soldiers in search and rescue missions and to inspect potential threats from Improvised Explosive Devices, or IEDs.  More

Mine operators oppose plans to rewrite water rules

Mine operators heaped criticism on the federal government's plan to extensively rewrite the rules designed to protect streams from surface coal mines. Officials with the West Virginia Coal Association and mine operator International Coal Group Inc. contend the plan by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is really an attempt to eliminate surface mining in Appalachia.  More

Rambler signs definitive agreement with Tenacity Gold Mining for custom ore milling

Rambler Metals and Mining PLC is pleased to announce it has entered into a Toll Processing Agreement with Tenacity Gold Mining Co. Ltd. Tenacity will deliver ore for processing from its Deer Cove and Stog'er Tight Gold Mines to Rambler's Nugget Pond mill which is located within 50km of these deposits. The cost plus toll processing arrangement will commence no later than Aug. 30, 2010 and continue for a period of 6 months or until a minimum of 63,000 tons has been processed.   More

PHMSA proposes new rule for explosives transport

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to change rules governing safe havens for the transportation of certain explosives. A safe haven is an area designated by the federal, state or local government for the parking of unattended vehicles transporting explosives.  More
