Trapped Chilean miners sing national anthem in first verbal contact

The 33 workers trapped inside a mine in Chile cheered, applauded and sang the country's national anthem in their first verbal contact with officials. Several of Chile's top officials gathered around a white telephone outside the mine Monday evening as the miners' voices crackled through the speakers in an emotional conversation that was also broadcast on television.  More

Planning Commission approves explosives storage in southeast Minot

An oil-field company gained the Minot Planning Commission's approval to store explosives in southeast Minot despite continued protest by neighboring landowners. E&P Wireline Services of Midland, Texas, applied for a permit to store explosives in a shop facility and storage bunker at 205-42nd St. SE. The Minot Fire Department gave its approval because of the minor explosive hazard and the safety precautions proposed.  More

Nigeria: Government charges quarry operators on mining laws

The Federal Government has advised Quarry operators to comply with safety rules and regulations for sustainable development in the mining industry in Nigeria. The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc. Musa Mohammed Sada, who gave the charge during an interactive session with the quarry operators, in Abuja, observed that most of the quarry operators are not operating in line with the relevant sections of the Minerals and Mining Act of 2007 pertaining to environmental safety and sustainability.  More
