Do colleagues kill your productivity?

Mom Corps, a job placement firm that focuses on flexible professional work, just released a survey of more than 1,000 employed adults. The survey finds that more than half (53 percent) of workers thought they'd get more work done if they had the ability to work from home occasionally. A few days before that, FlexJobs, another placement firm with a focus on telecommuting, asked job seekers why they wanted remote employment. The key reason among more than 800 respondents was having fewer interruptions from colleagues — 82 percent just wanted to work without interruption. More

The Office of Naval Research recently demonstrated the next phase of an augmented-reality project that will change the way soldiers view operational environments — literally. ONR says it has completed the first year of a multiyear augmented-reality effort, developing a system that allow trainees to view simulated images superimposed on real-world landscapes. One example of augmented reality technology can be seen in sports broadcasts, which use it to highlight first-down lines on football fields and animate hockey pucks to help TV viewers with interpreting plays. Despite uncertainty in the job market, the top reasons working Americans say they stay with their current employers are work-life fit and enjoying what they do, according to a recent survey by the American Psychological Association. Fewer employees cited concrete reasons for remaining on the job, such as benefits, pay and a lack of other job opportunities. The Workforce Retention Survey, which was conducted among employed adults age 18 and older, examined the factors that contribute to employee retention. Although 60 percent of working Americans said they remain with their current employers because of benefits and 59 percent reported staying because of the pay, more than two-thirds (67 percent) said they choose to stay because their jobs fit well with the other aspects of their lives.
