Wichita medical school receives high marks for training rural docs

The University of Kansas School of Medicine's campus in Wichita is among the nation's top producers of primary care physicians, according to a recent survey of medical school data. It also is placing far more physicians in rural and underserved areas than most medical schools.
"What's happening in Wichita is fantastic," said Dr. Candice Chen, an assistant research professor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. "The data show that 30 percent of their residents are going to rural and underserved areas. That's amazing when you consider that nationally it's around 5 percent."
Free AIM-HI Patient education brochure: Understanding Vitamin D
The AAFP's Americans in Motion-Healthy Interventions (AIM-HI) initiative is offering members a free brochure to help educate patients on vitamin D basics. The Understanding Vitamin D patient-education brochure is specific to family medicine and comes in a 25-count package.
Transitional Care Management Code worksheet helps track dates and deadlines
Transitional care management refers to the time spent coordinating a patient's care during his or her transition from an inpatient setting, such as a hospital or nursing facility, back to the home or community.
As a primary care physician, either you or a licensed clinical staff member under your direction can perform these services. And the services must be billed 30 days after the patient's discharge.
State, local officials to discuss strategies to improve health at Kansas Obesity Summit

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will join Robert Moser, M.D., Secretary and State Health Officer, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and other state leaders on Sept. 30 in Topeka from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ramada Topeka Downtown Hotel and Convention Center for the Governor's Council on Fitness' second annual Kansas Obesity Summit. The purpose of the summit is to engage decision-makers in identifying and promoting best and most promising strategies to address rising rates and the health and economic impact of obesity in Kansas.

CMS ICD-10 Resources Toolkit
This toolkit includes ICD-10 resources and materials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help the healthcare industry with the transition to ICD-10. The ICD-9 code sets that are currently used to report health care diagnoses and inpatient procedures must now be replaced with ICD-10 code sets. Mandated by law, this change will take place on Oct. 1, 2014. The transition to ICD-10 affects diagnosis and inpatient procedure coding for everyone covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
