Employers added 164,000 new nonfarm jobs in April vs. 103,000 hires in March, as the unemployment rate dipped to 3.9 percent after holding at 4.1 percent for six straight months, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Employment growth led the way in healthcare, manufacturing, mining and professional and business services. The number of long-term unemployed was unchanged at 1.3 million in April, matching March's total.
U.S. manufacturing activity remained robust in April but the pace of growth slowed, according to the Institute for Supply Management's monthly Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The April PMI registered 57.3 percent, the second consecutive monthly decrease and down two percentage points from the March reading of 59.3 percent.
The ideal factory or manufacturing plant is one that is not just automated regarding development, but also when it comes to maintenance and operation. Even just a minor malfunction of major systems can have sweeping ramifications on productivity and efficiency. That's why the regular maintenance and servicing of factory hardware is so crucial to operations.
U.S. factories are having too much of a good thing, with surging demand leading to systemwide bottlenecks that are weighing on business and potentially the broader economy. The latest evidence came in the Institute for Supply Management's April manufacturing survey, which showed that despite robust orders, production cooled as suppliers' delivery times lengthened, backlogs mounted, materials prices picked up and hiring slowed.
The pace of digital transformation in the manufacturing industry is relentless. But as Kevin Bull, product strategy director at Columbus UK explains, digital transformation is not just about deploying emerging technologies — it's about using the data collected to create new business opportunities, better understand and meet customer expectations and put in place a future-proof digital strategy.
Encouraged by a booming demand for construction equipment, Mike Haberman was planning in early February to hire at least 30 more workers for the manufacturing facility of his Gradall Industries in Ohio. That plan now is shelved, Haberman said, because the cost of steel used in Gradall's telescopic excavators and vacuum trucks shot up by one-third following President Donald Trump's crackdown on steel imports.
